India Sees Surge in PNG Connections: Over 5 Lakh Activated, How to Apply

· · 3 min read

India is rapidly expanding its Piped Natural Gas (PNG) network, with over 500,000 new connections activated since March 2026 and nearly 600,000 new registrations. This push comes amidst efforts to manage LPG supplies following geopolitical disruptions, encouraging a shift to the more stable PNG.

India is witnessing a significant transition in its domestic energy landscape, with a robust expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections across the nation. Since March 2026, more than 5.01 lakh new PNG connections have been successfully gasified, marking the commencement of gas supply to these households and businesses. This surge is complemented by over 5.68 lakh new customer registrations, indicating a growing demand for this cleaner and more convenient fuel source.

The push towards PNG is largely influenced by global geopolitical events, specifically the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has caused disruptions in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) supplies. To ensure energy security and stable access to cooking fuel, the government has actively encouraged both households and industries to switch from LPG cylinders to the piped alternative.

Government Initiatives and Impact

Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, confirmed these figures during a recent news briefing. She highlighted that gasification includes applications submitted both before and after the recent supply challenges. Furthermore, by April 19, approximately 39,400 PNG consumers had already surrendered their LPG connections, demonstrating a tangible shift in consumer preference.

Authorities have prioritized natural gas allocation for city gas distribution networks, ensuring full supply to domestic PNG and transport CNG segments. This strategic move aims to stabilize energy access while also increasing supplies to critical sectors like fertilizer plants and various industries. City gas firms, including major operators like Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL), Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL), GAIL Gas Ltd, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, have been directed to expedite PNG connections, particularly for commercial users.

How to Apply for a New PNG Connection

Securing a new PNG connection involves a straightforward process. Here's a step-by-step guide:

1. Identify Your Provider

First, determine which City Gas Distribution (CGD) company serves your area. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) authorizes specific operators for each region. Major providers include:

  • Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL): Delhi-NCR
  • Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL): Mumbai and surrounding areas
  • Gujarat Gas: Various cities across Gujarat, including Ahmedabad and Surat
  • Adani Total Gas: Cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Faridabad, and parts of Uttar Pradesh
  • GAIL Gas Limited: Cities such as Bengaluru, Patna, and several districts in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh

2. Check Service Availability

Visit your designated provider's website and use their online tool to check if PNG pipelines are available in your specific address or pin code area. If service is available, you can proceed with your application.

3. Submit Your Application

Applications can typically be submitted both online through the provider's website or offline at their customer service centers. You will need to furnish several documents:

  • Identity Proof: Aadhar card, passport, driving license, etc.
  • Address Proof: Utility bills, Aadhar card, etc.
  • Property Documents: Ownership papers or a valid rent agreement.

4. Understand the Costs

A refundable security deposit is usually required. For instance, IGL's deposit ranges from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000, depending on the consumption category. This deposit typically covers equipment like the GI/Copper pipeline (excluding the rubber pipe) and varies by city and provider.

5. Installation and Activation

Once your application is submitted and the security payment is made, a site inspection will be conducted to assess feasibility. Following approval, technicians will visit your premises to install the pipeline connection and the gas meter. After a successful installation, your PNG connection is typically activated within 7 to 15 days, providing you with a continuous and reliable supply of natural gas.
