New Delhi – India has moved to diversify its energy sources, initiating oil purchases from African nations and securing new supply contracts to safeguard fuel availability. The move comes as tensions in West Asia continue to disrupt global energy markets, prompting India to bolster the resilience of its supply chains.
African Partnerships Strengthen Energy Security
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, chairing the sixth meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Group of Ministers (IGoM) on Wednesday, confirmed that India has begun procuring oil from countries such as Nigeria. These new agreements are crucial steps to ensure a steady flow of essential commodities and mitigate potential impacts from geopolitical instability.
During the meeting, the IGoM assessed the nation's preparedness and confirmed that the supply situation for essential goods remains normal. Ministers were informed that there is no shortage of fuel or other vital supplies within the country, with LPG production reportedly reaching a record high.
Government Assures Ample Supplies, Warns Against Panic
In light of the ongoing efforts, Minister Singh appealed to the public to refrain from panic buying petrol, diesel, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). He emphasized that the government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, has implemented multiple measures to ensure uninterrupted supplies of essential items since the West Asia conflict began.
“The supply situation in the country today is normal. The Citizens should avoid panic purchase of petrol, diesel, and LPG as the Govt is pulling out all stops to ensure the availability of all essential items,” Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated following the IGoM meeting.
The government's proactive strategy aims to maintain economic stability and ensure that daily life for citizens remains unaffected by international energy market fluctuations. The diversification of oil imports to Africa marks a significant step in India's long-term energy security planning.
