India is reportedly considering a substantial upgrade to its formidable Su-30MKI fighter jet fleet, aiming to bolster the Indian Air Force's (IAF) long-range air combat capabilities. The Defence Ministry is evaluating a proposal to modify these Russian-origin aircraft to integrate the advanced RVV-BD long-range air-to-air missile. With over 260 Su-30MKI aircraft in operation, this platform is a cornerstone of the IAF's combat readiness, undergoing continuous modernization.
Understanding the RVV-BD Long-Range Missile
The RVV-BD, an export designation for Russia's R-37M missile family, stands for Raketa Vozduh-Vozduh Bolshoy Dalnosti, meaning long-range air-to-air missile. This weapon is designed for very-long-range engagements, reportedly capable of striking targets up to 300 km away, with some technical publications suggesting even greater maximum figures under optimal conditions. The missile is also noted for its impressive speed, reaching approximately Mach 6 in its terminal phase, delivering significant kinetic energy.
Crucially, the RVV-BD is not merely another weapon for fighter-on-fighter combat. It is particularly effective against high-value airborne assets such as airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) platforms, reconnaissance aircraft, and other support aircraft operating behind enemy fighter formations.
