India Launches E85 Fuel on World Environment Day, Targets 500 Pumps by Year-End

· · 2 min read

India officially launched E85 fuel on World Environment Day, with Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri inaugurating the 85% ethanol blend. Priced below conventional petrol, the initiative targets 500 dispensing stations across major cities by the end of 2026.

India marked a significant step towards sustainable energy on World Environment Day, June 4, 2026, with the official launch of E85 fuel. Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, inaugurated the new blend, comprising 85% ethanol and 15% petrol, at an Indian Oil petrol pump on Pusa Road, Delhi.

Driving Economic and Environmental Benefits

The introduction of E85 fuel is poised to offer substantial economic advantages for consumers. Minister Puri emphasized that E85 will be priced significantly below conventional petrol, creating a compelling financial incentive for the adoption of flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) across the country. He noted that consumer economics are a critical factor in driving the acceptance of new technologies, with studies indicating that FFV owners could achieve cost parity with conventional vehicles rapidly due to the cheaper E85 fuel.

Beyond individual savings, this initiative is central to India's broader strategy to reduce its heavy reliance on imported crude oil, which currently accounts for nearly 89% of the nation's requirements. By boosting domestic ethanol consumption, E85 fuel is expected to contribute to significant foreign exchange savings, building on the ₹1.84 lakh crore already saved through the substitution of 302 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil by increased ethanol blending since 2014.

Phased Rollout and National Expansion

The rollout of E85 fuel will occur in phases, beginning with approximately 50 to 100 dispensing stations in key urban corridors. These initial locations include Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur. The network is slated for rapid expansion, with plans to establish around 500 E85 outlets by December 2026. Minister Puri outlined an ambitious target of approximately 5,000 dispensing stations across major cities by the end of 2027.

The success of this program is further bolstered by E85's designation as a 'monofuel standard' for flex-fuel vehicles under Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) specifications. This standardization, coupled with a national rollout of FFVs across various vehicle segments, is expected to ensure widespread adoption and market stability.

Boosting Domestic Ethanol Production

India has been steadily increasing ethanol blending in petrol, rising from 1.5% in 2014 to 20% by 2026. The introduction of E85 is projected to further amplify this trend. Minister Puri highlighted that if 50% of new two-wheelers and four-wheelers become flex-fuel compliant, the demand for ethanol in fuel could surge by 400 crore liters, adding to the existing 1,100 crore liters. This increased demand will not only support the nation's energy independence but also create additional opportunities for domestically produced ethanol.
