India Fuel Prices Stable on July 12 Amid Hormuz Tensions; Commercial LPG Cheaper

· · 2 min read

Domestic LPG, CNG, and PNG prices remain unchanged across major Indian cities on July 12. This stability comes despite renewed US-Iran hostilities raising concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, a key energy route. Commercial LPG cylinder rates saw a reduction.

Consumers across India will find domestic LPG, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) prices unchanged on July 12. This marks a period of stability for household energy costs, even as global energy markets face renewed volatility due to geopolitical developments.

However, commercial 19-kg LPG cylinders have seen a price reduction this month, offering some relief to businesses. This reduction follows a return to normal supply levels for commercial LPG after previous disruptions.

Geopolitical Concerns and Energy Routes

The stability in domestic fuel prices comes against a backdrop of heightened international tensions. The United States and Iran have resumed military strikes against each other, reigniting worries about the security of the Strait of Hormuz. This vital waterway is a critical passage for a significant portion of the world's energy supplies, and any disruption can have far-reaching effects on global oil and gas prices.

US President Donald Trump reportedly declared an earlier peace deal with Iran "over" before launching a fresh wave of strikes targeting facilities along Iran's southern coast. These actions were purportedly aimed at safeguarding commercial shipping through the Strait.

Shipping and Regional Caution

Shipping data indicates a cautious environment in the Strait of Hormuz. Reports from S&P Global MINT and S&P Global Commodities at Sea highlighted a notable increase in "dark crossings" – vessels operating without visible tracking signals – in the strait. On July 7, 36% of crossings were conducted in this manner, significantly higher than the month's average, signaling heightened concern among commercial shippers.
