India's Fuel Market Faces Geopolitical Headwinds
As of April 20, 2026, consumers across India are observing the latest price revisions for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Piped Natural Gas (PNG). These updates come amidst persistent geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which continue to exert pressure on global energy markets and, consequently, India's domestic fuel costs and supply.
Commercial LPG Prices See Significant Jump
The price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder in Delhi increased by a notable Rs 195.50, reaching Rs 2,078.50. This hike, effective April 1, is directly attributed to a substantial 44 percent surge in the Saudi Contract Price, which rose from $542 per tonne in March to $780 per tonne in April. In contrast, domestic LPG cylinder prices (14.2 kg) have largely remained stable across major cities.
Geopolitical Tensions Impact Global Energy Supply
The ongoing uncertainty surrounding peace talks between the US and Iran, coupled with the continued blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, has fueled concerns over energy pricing. Further complicating the situation, the US did not renew sanctions waivers on Russian and Iranian oil, which previously allowed countries like India to procure oil under specific conditions. Recent reports of the US seizing an Iranian vessel and alleged Iranian attacks on US military ships in the Sea of Oman have only intensified challenges for the energy market, particularly for import-dependent nations like India. The country relies heavily on West Asian suppliers such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar for over 40 percent of its crude oil and a staggering 90 percent of its LPG imports, making it highly vulnerable to regional instability.
LPG Consumption Drops Amid Supply Disruptions
Official data indicates a steep 13 percent fall in India's cooking gas (LPG) consumption during March. This decline is directly linked to supply disruptions stemming from the West Asia conflict, affecting both household kitchens and commercial users. Total LPG consumption stood at 2.379 million tonnes in March, down from 2.729 million tonnes in the same period last year. The drop was pronounced across various user segments: cylinders sold to domestic households fell by 8.1 percent, non-domestic users saw a nearly 48 percent reduction, and bulk LPG sales plummeted by a massive 75.5 percent. To mitigate the shortfall and safeguard household availability, the government has reportedly reduced LPG supplies to commercial establishments and industries, and directed refineries to divert feedstock from petrochemical production to boost domestic LPG output. This strategy led to a rise in domestic LPG production to 1.4 million tonnes in March from 1.1 million tonnes a year prior.
