India Fuel Prices Hold Steady July 7 Despite Brent Crude Drop; Minister Explains Delay

· · 3 min read

Petrol and diesel prices across major Indian cities remained unchanged on July 7, even as global Brent crude oil prices fell to a four-month low. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated retailers are still processing older, higher-priced crude inventories.

Fuel prices for petrol and diesel across India remained largely stable on July 7, with no significant changes observed in major metropolitan areas. This comes despite a notable decline in global Brent crude oil prices, which have fallen to a four-month low amidst easing geopolitical tensions.

Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri addressed the lack of immediate price cuts, explaining that domestic fuel retailers are still working through existing inventories of higher-priced crude oil. This crude was purchased during the peak of the West Asia crisis, delaying the impact of current lower global rates on consumer prices.

Petrol and diesel prices have maintained their current levels since May 25, when state-owned Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) last adjusted rates, increasing petrol by ₹2.61 per litre and diesel by ₹2.71 per litre.

Current Fuel Rates in Major Cities

In the capital, Delhi, petrol continues to be priced at ₹102.12 per litre, while diesel is retailing at ₹95.20 per litre. Mumbai residents are paying ₹111.21 per litre for petrol and ₹97.83 per litre for diesel, with petrol prices remaining above the ₹110 mark.

Other major cities also saw consistent rates. Bengaluru recorded petrol at ₹110.82 and diesel at ₹98.77. In Kolkata, petrol stood at ₹113.51 and diesel at ₹99.82. Chennai's prices were ₹107.76 for petrol and ₹99.55 for diesel. Hyderabad notably had petrol at ₹116.99 and diesel at ₹105.03, making it one of the cities where diesel prices exceeded ₹100.

Nayara Energy Cuts Prices

In a separate development, Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy implemented a reduction in fuel prices last week. The company cut petrol prices by ₹5 per litre and diesel prices by ₹3 per litre across its extensive network of nearly 7,000 fuel stations nationwide.

Understanding India's Fuel Price Dynamics

Several interconnected global, economic, and domestic factors determine the retail price of petrol and diesel at the pump in India. The international price of crude oil is the single most significant determinant, as it forms the base raw material for both fuels.

The rupee-dollar exchange rate also plays a crucial role. Since India heavily relies on imported crude, a weakening rupee against the dollar increases the cost of procurement, which can directly translate into higher retail fuel prices for consumers.

Additionally, taxes levied by both the central and state governments constitute a substantial portion of the final retail price. This dual taxation structure is the primary reason for the variation in petrol and diesel rates across different states and cities.

Finally, local factors such as transportation costs from refineries to distribution points, along with prevailing demand-supply conditions in specific regions, also influence the final price consumers pay.
