Fuel prices in India saw recent adjustments, with Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) rates climbing in key metropolitan areas. Consumers in Delhi and Mumbai are facing higher costs for these alternative fuels, while Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder prices have held steady on September 4, 2026.
CNG and PNG See Price Rises
Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) implemented a ₹2 per kg increase for CNG in Mumbai, bringing the new rate to ₹88 per kg, effective September 1. Simultaneously, MGL also raised the price of domestic Piped Natural Gas (DPNG) by ₹1 per standard cubic metre (SCM).
In Delhi, Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) increased CNG prices by ₹3.89 per kg, effective August 29. This hike raised the CNG price in the capital to ₹86.98 per kg, up from ₹83.09 per kg. IGL cited a sharp rise in international LNG prices and disruptions to gas cargo movements through the Strait of Hormuz as reasons for the adjustment. This marks a cumulative increase of nearly ₹10 per kg in Delhi's CNG prices this year.

Government Efforts to Diversify Fuel Sources
Amidst these price fluctuations, the Indian government is actively pursuing strategies to reduce its reliance on imported cooking gas and secure alternative supply sources. Efforts include strengthening domestic LPG availability and expanding piped natural gas connections. An incentive scheme for city gas distributors, approved from September 1, 2026, aims to boost domestic PNG connections. States and Union Territories have been urged to provide administrative support to facilitate the transition from LPG to piped gas. India is also increasing its engagement with the United States for LPG and LNG supplies, particularly in response to disruptions in West Asia.
