Consumers in Delhi, Mumbai, and other major Indian cities are facing renewed concerns over rising fuel costs, with significant hikes recently implemented for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). These increases come as the government simultaneously works to reduce reliance on imported cooking gas and expand piped natural gas (PNG) infrastructure across the country.
Recent CNG Price Increases
Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) recently raised CNG prices in Delhi by ₹3.89 per kg, effective August 29, bringing the new rate to ₹86.98 per kg from ₹83.09 per kg. This surge is attributed to a sharp rise in international LNG prices, exacerbated by the renewed West Asia crisis and disruptions to gas cargo movements through the Strait of Hormuz. The latest hike means Delhi has seen a cumulative increase of nearly ₹10 per kg this year, starting from ₹77.09 per kg at the beginning of the year.
Following IGL, Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) also increased CNG prices in Mumbai by ₹2 per kg, pushing rates to ₹88 per kg in and around the city, effective September 1. MGL also hiked the price of domestic PNG by ₹1 per standard cubic metre (SCM) from the same date.

Government Initiatives and Global Supply
In a bid to curb subsidy expenditure and promote cleaner energy, the government approved an incentive scheme for city gas distributors starting September 1, 2026. This initiative aims to significantly increase domestic PNG connections, with states and Union Territories urged to provide administrative support to facilitate the shift from LPG to piped gas.
Simultaneously, India is actively diversifying its energy sources, increasing LPG and LNG supplies from the United States amid ongoing disruptions in West Asia. Maritime tracking services reported significant crude oil and gas ship-to-ship transfers in the Gulf of Oman on September 4, with many tankers awaiting transfer, highlighting the crowded and busy shipping lanes critical for global energy supplies.
