The Indian government is accelerating efforts to revive state-owned Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT) with a proposed ₹2,000 crore investment. Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy has submitted the plan to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for Union Cabinet consideration.

The Indian government is moving swiftly to implement a significant revival plan for Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT), a public-sector engineering and manufacturing giant. The proposed initiative involves an investment exceeding ₹2,000 crore, aimed at revitalizing the company's operations and bolstering its manufacturing capabilities.

Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy has formally presented the comprehensive revival package to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Government sources indicate that the proposal is anticipated to be brought before the Union Cabinet for approval in the near future, marking a critical step in HMT's planned resurgence.

Strengthening Domestic Manufacturing

This strategic move aligns with the government's broader objective to enhance India's domestic manufacturing capacity and breathe new life into key public-sector industrial assets. HMT, which was once a prominent name in the nation's industrial landscape, has faced considerable financial and operational hurdles over many years.

The proposed revival strategy is expected to concentrate on optimizing the utilization of HMT’s existing manufacturing infrastructure and leveraging its inherent capabilities more effectively. The government views HMT as a strategically important asset, making its revival crucial for national industrial goals.

The Road Ahead for HMT

Further specifics regarding the allocation of the proposed investment across HMT’s various manufacturing units and the overall framework of the revival package are expected to become clear once the proposal undergoes the Cabinet approval process. This fast-tracked approach underscores the Centre's commitment to ensuring the long-term viability and productivity of HMT.
