India Eyes New Support Scheme for Electric Trucks, Boosts Domestic EV Component Production

India's Prime Minister's Advisor, Tarun Kapoor, announced plans for a dedicated push to accelerate electric truck adoption, including potential new support schemes. The initiative prioritizes heavy commercial vehicles and aims to bolster domestic manufacturing of EV components to reduce reliance on China.

The Indian government is preparing a significant push to accelerate the adoption of electric trucks across the nation, with discussions underway for potential new support schemes. Tarun Kapoor, Advisor to the Prime Minister, stated that heavy commercial vehicles are a top priority in the next phase of India's electric mobility transition.

Driving Electric Truck Adoption

Speaking at a recent industry event, Kapoor highlighted that if current initiatives prove successful, the Centre may introduce additional measures specifically for electric trucks. He pointed to the recently launched Parivartan Scheme for the National Capital Region (NCR) as a key driver. This scheme offers incentives to replace older diesel commercial vehicles with cleaner alternatives, including BS-VI compliant, CNG, and electric models.

Kapoor expressed optimism that a significant portion of these replacements would transition to electric vehicles. Should the Parivartan Scheme yield desired results, the government is open to considering a dedicated program tailored for electric trucks.

Innovative Financing and Infrastructure

To address the high upfront costs associated with electric trucks, the government is actively exploring innovative financing models. These include battery leasing and third-party battery ownership, encouraging the industry to develop solutions that enhance commercial viability for heavy-duty electric vehicles.

Furthermore, plans are in motion to establish dedicated charging infrastructure in freight-intensive sectors such. These areas include mining, port operations, and along approximately 60 major highways, facilitating long-haul electric trucking. Large fleet operators and logistics companies will also be encouraged to progressively integrate electric trucks into their fleets, driven by viable operating economics.

Boosting Domestic Manufacturing and Reducing Dependence

A critical aspect of India's strategy is to significantly expand domestic manufacturing of essential EV components and batteries, thereby reducing dependence on foreign supply chains. Kapoor emphasized the need to decrease reliance on countries like China for strategic components such as batteries and electric motors, ensuring supply stability within the country.

The government is prepared to implement policy interventions, if necessary, to strengthen local manufacturing of these critical components and secure supplies of vital minerals and raw materials. The overarching goal is to achieve a several-fold increase in EV manufacturing capacity and production, making electric mobility highly visible on Indian roads within the next five years.

Supporting Broader EV Initiatives

Kapoor also voiced support for the Delhi government's recently notified EV Policy, noting that it sends a positive signal and provides incentives that could accelerate electric vehicle adoption, particularly in the two-wheeler segment.

Addressing concerns about charging infrastructure, Kapoor acknowledged that some public chargers remain underutilized. However, he confirmed that oil marketing companies have been directed to ensure operational reliability of charging stations. A universal EV charging application is also nearing rollout, which will enable users to locate functional charging points, while the Ministry of Heavy Industries is tasked with creating a robust monitoring system for the national charging network.
