India Expands Smartphone Manufacturing to Core Components, Says Minister Vaishnaw

· · 2 min read

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced India is deepening its electronics manufacturing capabilities. The country will now produce advanced smartphone components like synthetic graphite, battery additives, PCBs, and cameras, moving beyond simple device assembly.

India is significantly expanding its footprint in smartphone manufacturing, moving beyond mere assembly to the production of crucial components and materials. Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed this shift, highlighting the country's deepening involvement in the electronics value chain.

Beyond Assembly: Manufacturing What's Inside

Minister Vaishnaw, in a series of posts on X, detailed how India is progressing in its 'Make in India' initiative. The focus is now on manufacturing the intricate parts and specialized materials that constitute modern smartphones, rather than just putting pre-made components together.

"India already makes the phone. Now, we’re going deeper – manufacturing what goes inside it," Vaishnaw stated, signaling a strategic move towards greater self-reliance in the electronics sector.

Specialized Battery Materials and Additives

A key area of expansion is in the production of lithium-ion battery cells and their constituent materials. Vaishnaw specifically mentioned synthetic graphite, a vital material used in the anode of lithium-ion batteries, which will now be domestically produced.

Beyond graphite, India is also focusing on manufacturing specialized additives for electrolytes within lithium-ion batteries. These additives are crucial for enhancing battery performance and extending their lifespan. Another material highlighted is acetylene black, which improves electrical conductivity within the battery.

This push into specialized battery materials signifies a move beyond the final battery cell into the fundamental inputs required for advanced battery production.

Expanding to Other Critical Components

The manufacturing expansion isn't limited to batteries. India is also increasing its domestic production of a wide array of other smartphone components, including:

  • Cameras
  • Displays
  • Speakers
  • Coils
  • Enclosures
  • Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs)
  • Connectors

These components are integral to the broader electronics supply chain supporting smartphone production. Vaishnaw emphasized that this expansion represents a significant step towards greater depth in domestic manufacturing, reinforcing the 'Make in India' journey by moving further up the value chain.

The minister's comments underscore India's ongoing efforts to bolster its electronics manufacturing ecosystem, with a clear strategy to produce even more components and materials domestically in the coming years.
