KAPURTHALA, INDIA – India has dispatched the first consignment of 19 specially designed LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) passenger coaches to Bangladesh, manufactured by the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala. These coaches are part of a broader order and have been meticulously engineered to enhance passenger comfort and safety, while also addressing Bangladesh’s specific operational requirements.
Enhanced Comfort for Long Journeys
The new coaches introduce several significant upgrades aimed at improving the travel experience. A key feature is the inclusion of specially designed reclining chairs, complete with stainless steel armrests and footrests, offering passengers multiple comfortable positions during long-distance journeys. AC coaches will also be equipped with fans to ensure optimal ventilation.
Beyond seating, the coaches incorporate family-friendly and amenity-focused provisions. Passengers will find a dedicated Baby Care Room, providing convenience for parents traveling with infants. Additionally, a Prayer Room has been integrated, catering to the spiritual needs of travelers.
Advanced Safety and Surveillance
Safety has been a paramount consideration in the design of these new coaches. Each coach is fitted with an integrated CCTV surveillance system, enhancing security and allowing for continuous monitoring. A readily accessible passenger alarm system ensures quick response in emergencies. Furthermore, the windows are partially openable, offering an additional safety feature.
The structural integrity of the coaches meets stringent international standards. They feature crashworthy provisions that comply with the European Standard EN 15227. Achieving this certification required a comprehensive redesign of the car body shell, significantly improving collision performance and overall passenger safety.
Tailored for Bangladesh's Unique Conditions
Understanding the distinct operating environment in Bangladesh, RCF has incorporated several country-specific adaptations:
- Strengthened Roofs: The coach roofs have been reinforced to safely withstand additional loading, a necessary provision for periods of peak traffic when passengers may travel on the roof.
- 415 V Electrical System: Unlike the conventional 750 V system used by Indian Railways, these coaches will operate on a 415 V electrical system, aligning with Bangladesh Railway's existing infrastructure and operational standards.
Continuing Partnership
This delivery marks another chapter in the ongoing collaboration between India and Bangladesh in railway development. Bangladesh Railway previously received 120 LHB broad gauge passenger coaches from RCF during 2015-16. The partnership further expanded in 2024 when RCF, through RITES, secured an order for 200 broad gauge passenger coaches across seven different variants, solidifying India's role in modernizing Bangladesh's rail network.
