India Counters Global Economic Weaponization with Strategic Trade Diversification

· · 3 min read

India is actively countering the weaponization of economic policies like tariffs and sanctions by strategically diversifying its trade relationships and supply chains, according to PM's Principal Secretary PK Mishra. This includes expanding energy suppliers and critical mineral alliances.

New Delhi, India – India is strategically bolstering its economic resilience against the backdrop of increasingly weaponized global trade policies, including tariffs and sanctions. Speaking at the Kautilya Economic Conclave, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, PK Mishra, emphasized the nation's proactive approach to navigate a world 'Priced for Risk'.

Mishra highlighted a significant shift in global commerce where traditional trade mechanisms are now frequently repurposed for geopolitical leverage. He noted that export restrictions, sanctions, and tariffs have become standard instruments, often explicitly weaponized to exert influence.

Geography's Resurgence in Global Trade

Despite technological advancements once thought to diminish the importance of physical distance, geography has re-emerged as a critical economic variable. Mishra pointed out that disruptions in major shipping routes can have far-reaching consequences, affecting commodity prices thousands of kilometers away. "Geography, we thought, technology has made it irrelevant. But it has returned to the centre of the table and it is not only oil," he stated, underscoring the vulnerability of global supply chains to choke points and disruptions.

India's Multi-Layered Economic Buffers

To insulate itself from extreme volatility without succumbing to isolationism, India is building multi-layered economic buffers. Mishra clarified, "Resilience cannot be insulation from the world. It has to mean the ability to remain open to the world without becoming excessively vulnerable to it."

Energy and Mineral Security Initiatives

  • Energy Diversification: New Delhi has significantly expanded its crude oil suppliers, increasing the number from 27 to 43 countries. This move aims to prevent concentrated vulnerabilities and enhance energy security.
  • Critical Minerals: The National Critical Mineral Mission is driving domestic exploration, processing, and recycling efforts. This initiative is further strengthened by international alliances with key partners such as the United States, France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Expanding Global Trade Agreements

In terms of external trade policy, India is actively broadening its network of economic agreements. Pacts with nations and blocs including the UAE, Australia, the UK, Oman, New Zealand, and the European Union are crucial to ensuring that integration into the global economy does not foster single-point dependencies.

"An open economy will always depend on other economies. The objective is not to eliminate that dependence, but to avoid excessive concentration," Mishra explained.

Concluding his address, Mishra articulated a vision for India's future in an uncertain global landscape. He believes that the nations best positioned for the future will be those that can remain steady without being closed, careful without being fearful, and ambitious without being naive. "India intends to be such a country," he affirmed.
