India Completes 10-Locomotive Export to Mozambique, Boosting Global Rail Manufacturing

· · 2 min read

Indian Railways, through Banaras Locomotive Works, has completed the delivery of 10 indigenously manufactured diesel-electric locomotives to Mozambique. This milestone project highlights India's growing capability in global rail equipment manufacturing.

Indian Railways has successfully completed the export of ten indigenously manufactured diesel-electric locomotives to Mozambique, marking a significant milestone in India's "Make for the World" initiative. The final batch of two 3,300-horsepower units recently arrived in Maputo, Mozambique's capital.

The locomotives were produced by the Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) in Varanasi, a key production unit of Indian Railways. This export order was facilitated through RITES Limited, a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, which handled the manufacturing and export contract.

Advanced Locomotives for Mozambique's Rail Network

The delivered locomotives are powerful 3,300-horsepower AC-AC diesel-electric models, specifically designed for Cape gauge (1067 mm) tracks, common in parts of Africa. They are capable of reaching speeds up to 100 km/h, enhancing operational efficiency for Mozambique's railway system.

Emphasis was placed on driver comfort and functionality, with each locomotive equipped with modern cabin features. These include a refrigerator, a hot plate, and a mobile holder, contributing to improved working conditions and overall operational effectiveness for train crews.

Phased Deliveries and Growing Global Footprint

The delivery of the ten locomotives was executed in phases, beginning in June 2025 with the first two units. Subsequent shipments followed throughout 2025 and into early 2026, with the tenth and final unit dispatched in February 2026, completing the full order.

This project underscores India's increasing capabilities in manufacturing and exporting high-quality railway equipment. Since 2014, BLW has been a significant contributor to global rail networks, having exported locomotives to various countries including Sri Lanka and Myanmar, in addition to Mozambique.

The successful completion of the Mozambique order solidifies India's position as a reliable supplier in the international rail manufacturing sector, further expanding its global footprint and showcasing the strength of its engineering and production prowess.
