India has officially approved its first dengue vaccine, with the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) clearing Takeda Biopharmaceuticals India's QDENGA for individuals aged 4 to 60 years. This landmark decision, announced on Monday, July 20, 2026, marks a crucial step in the nation's fight against the mosquito-borne disease.
The approval comes at a critical juncture for public health. Over the past two decades, reported dengue cases in India have surged eleven-fold, and the country accounts for nearly one-third of the global dengue burden. While over 113,000 cases were reported in 2025, modeling analyses suggest the actual number of infections could be in the tens of millions annually.
Understanding QDENGA: India's New Weapon Against Dengue
QDENGA is a tetravalent, live-attenuated vaccine engineered to provide protection against all four serotypes of the dengue virus. A key advantage of this vaccine is that it can be administered regardless of a person's prior exposure to dengue, eliminating the need for pre-vaccination testing. The vaccine is given subcutaneously as a two-dose regimen, with doses spaced three months apart.
Global Recognition and Clinical Rigor
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends QDENGA for use in dengue-endemic settings and supports its integration into public immunization programs, especially in areas with high transmission rates. The vaccine has also received WHO pre-qualification, affirming its quality, safety, and efficacy, which makes it eligible for procurement by international agencies such as UNICEF and PAHO.
Since its initial launch in 2022, QDENGA has secured approvals in 43 countries across Asia, Latin America, and Europe, with over 32 million doses distributed globally through both public and private health initiatives. The DCGI's approval in India is based on Takeda's extensive global clinical development program, which encompassed 19 Phase 1, 2, and 3 trials involving more than 28,000 participants in both endemic and non-endemic regions. This comprehensive program included the pivotal Phase III TIDES trial (DEN-301), which observed over 20,000 participants across eight countries for an extended period.
