The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM Bangalore) is set to establish its first international campus in Indonesia, a significant move announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to the nation. This expansion underscores India's commitment to broadening the global reach of its leading higher education institutions.
Strategic Location and Regional Focus
The new campus will be located within the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Malang. Its primary objective is to cater to Indonesian students while also attracting participants from across the wider ASEAN region, fostering regional academic collaboration and human capital development.
Phased Program Rollout
IIM Bangalore plans to launch its Indonesian campus in two distinct phases. Initially, the institution will offer executive education programs tailored for senior executives, business leaders, and public sector professionals. Following a successful two-year implementation of this first phase, the campus will introduce degree-granting management programs.
Advanced Curriculum and Industry Engagement
The curriculum for these programs will focus on five critical emerging areas: global supply chains, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, climate and sustainability, and healthcare management. Students will benefit from extensive interactions with industry leaders, distinguished academicians, and global experts.
Partnership and Broader Educational Vision
This ambitious project will be implemented through a Memorandum of Understanding between IIM Bangalore and PT Intelegensia Grahatama (PT IGT), the managing and development entity of the Singhasari SEZ. The initiative aligns with India's National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages premier Indian institutions to establish an international presence. Other Indian institutions, such as IIM Ahmedabad (Dubai) and IIT Delhi (Abu Dhabi), have already established overseas campuses, reflecting India's growing role as a provider of high-quality education globally.
Participants in the Indonesian programs will also have opportunities for short academic immersion visits to IIM Bangalore's main campus in Bengaluru, providing exposure to India's dynamic innovation ecosystem and business environment.
