IFCI Stock Surges 70% as NSE IPO Nears September 2026 Listing

· · 3 min read

IFCI shares have rallied nearly 70% in 2026, driven by anticipation for the National Stock Exchange's (NSE) upcoming IPO. The state-run financial institution holds an indirect stake in NSE, which is expected to list by September 25, 2026, potentially unlocking significant value.

Shares of IFCI, India's first development financial institution, have seen a remarkable surge, climbing nearly 70% in 2026. This significant rally is primarily attributed to the impending initial public offering (IPO) of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), in which IFCI holds an indirect stake.

IFCI's Rally and NSE Connection

While IFCI's core lending business has not reported major breakthroughs recently, market participants are eyeing the value-unlocking potential from the NSE IPO. IFCI owns a controlling 52.86% stake in Stock Holding Corporation of India Ltd (SHCIL), which in turn holds a 4.4% stake in the NSE. This indirect exposure has positioned IFCI as a key beneficiary of the anticipated mega IPO.

As of late August 2026, IFCI shares traded around Rs 92.10, pushing its market capitalization close to Rs 24,500 crore. Beyond the 70% year-to-date gain, the stock has also risen 20% in the last month and a staggering 700% over the past five years.

National Stock Exchange IPO Details

The National Stock Exchange's IPO is shaping up to be a major market event. NSE filed its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) in June 2026, proposing an offer for sale of up to 14.89 crore shares, representing nearly 6% of its paid-up capital. Notably, the IPO will not include a fresh issue component.

Sources indicate that the NSE aims to raise approximately Rs 30,000 crore from its maiden stake sale, valuing the exchange at nearly Rs 5 lakh crore. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) issued its observations on the draft papers on August 21, 2026, and the exchange is reportedly targeting a listing date on or before September 25, 2026.

Analyst Outlook and IFCI's Role

Brokerage firm Canara Bank maintains a positive outlook on IFCI, despite its strong recent performance, projecting further upside. According to their recent report, the stock has formed a flag pattern and achieved a strong breakout. Analysts noted that the price has moved above all moving averages, indicating improving momentum and a strengthening trend structure.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) for IFCI is near the bullish zone around 67, reflecting strong momentum that could continue in the short term. Canara Bank recommends buying IFCI at current market prices, setting short-term targets between Rs 116.13 and Rs 126.77, with a stop-loss at Rs 71.10.

Established in 1948, IFCI holds historical significance as India's first development financial institution. It provides a range of financial products and services focused on industrial and infrastructure development and acts as a nodal agency for various Government of India schemes, including Production Linked Incentive (PLI) initiatives.
