IEX Subsidiary Seeks Coal Trading License, Shares React

· · 2 min read

Indian Energy Exchange's subsidiary, Indian Coal Exchange, has applied to the Coal Controller Organisation for a license to operate a physical coal trading platform. This strategic expansion aims to create a transparent, technology-enabled marketplace, though IEX shares saw a slight dip following the announcement.

The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) is expanding its footprint in India's energy sector, with its newly formed subsidiary, Indian Coal Exchange Ltd, formally applying for a license to operate a physical delivery-based coal trading platform. This move signifies IEX's strategic push to diversify its market offerings beyond electricity and natural gas.

New Venture to Streamline Coal Trading

Indian Coal Exchange Ltd, incorporated on June 1, 2026, with an authorized share capital of Rs 100 crore, aims to establish an organized, transparent, and technology-enabled marketplace for coal trading across India. By bringing together buyers and sellers on a unified platform, the exchange is expected to facilitate more efficient price discovery and improve market access for participants.

The subsidiary has submitted its application to the Coal Controller Organisation (CCO), the designated regulatory authority for coal exchanges in India. Approval from the CCO is a prerequisite for the exchange to commence operations.

Leveraging Experience for a New Market

IEX plans for the Indian Coal Exchange to utilize technology-driven platforms similar to its existing successful operations in electricity and natural gas. This approach is intended to create a structured trading environment for physical coal, ensuring transparent transactions and clear delivery mechanisms, building on IEX's 18 years of experience in developing market-based trading platforms.

This expansion complements IEX's current portfolio, which includes India's leading electricity exchange, the Indian Gas Exchange (IGX) for natural gas trading, and its role in facilitating Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) issuance. The group's strategy is to broaden its presence across the entire energy value chain in India.

Market Reaction to the Announcement

Following the announcement, shares of Indian Energy Exchange Ltd experienced a marginal decline. In Monday's trading session on September 28, 2026, IEX shares fell by 1.02%, reaching a low of Rs 111.60, down from their previous close of Rs 112.75.

The establishment of the Indian Coal Exchange represents a significant step for IEX as it seeks to deepen its involvement in India's diverse and evolving energy markets, pending regulatory approval.
