ICICI Bank & Visa Launch India's First USD Debit Card for NRIs at GIFT City

· · 2 min read

ICICI Bank, in partnership with Visa, has unveiled India's first US dollar-denominated debit card for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) via its IFSC Banking Unit at GIFT City. This new offering aims to simplify global banking by allowing direct access to USD savings and reducing currency conversion costs for international transactions.

ICICI Bank and Visa have collaborated to introduce a groundbreaking payment solution: India's first US dollar-denominated debit card specifically designed for Non-Resident Indian (NRI) customers. The card is being issued through ICICI Bank's IFSC Banking Unit (IBU) at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), marking a significant step in international banking services for NRIs.

Seamless Global Spending for NRIs

This innovative debit card is linked directly to ICICI Bank’s USD Global Savings Account, enabling users to access their dollar-denominated savings for global spending without the need for frequent currency conversions. This feature is particularly beneficial for NRIs who often face challenges such as high foreign exchange conversion costs and the complexities of managing multiple banking relationships across different countries.

Built on Visa’s premium Infinite platform, the card facilitates transactions across international ATMs, point-of-sale (PoS) terminals, and e-commerce platforms worldwide. A key benefit is the elimination of markup fees on US dollar transactions conducted at PoS terminals and online, which traditionally add to the expense for frequent international travelers and overseas users.

Enhanced Security and Control Features

Security and user control are central to the card's design. It incorporates EMV chip-enabled technology, adhering to global regulatory standards. Cardholders can manage their usage preferences through GIFT City NetBanking, with options to enable or disable ATM withdrawals, PoS transactions, e-commerce payments, and contactless features. Users can also set daily transaction limits, providing greater control over spending and enhancing overall security.

Premium Benefits and Strategic Importance

Beyond its core payment functionalities, the debit card offers access to exclusive Visa Infinite privileges. These include various travel-related benefits, curated lifestyle experiences, and special offers from participating global brands. Vipul Agarwal, Head of Cards and Payment Solutions at ICICI Bank, highlighted that the increasing global mobility of Indians has driven the demand for more integrated international banking solutions, emphasizing that this collaboration with Visa combines global acceptance with premium service capabilities.

Rishi Chhabra, Visa India Country Manager, noted that this launch addresses the evolving financial needs of NRIs and aligns with India's broader vision of developing globally connected financial infrastructure through GIFT City. The initiative further solidifies GIFT City’s role as a burgeoning hub for offshore banking services and international financial innovation within India.
