Varthaman, a recipient of the Vir Chakra, India's third-highest wartime gallantry award, has joined the regional airline Fly91 as a pilot.
Transition to Commercial Aviation
Sources close to the development confirmed that Varthaman officially left the Indian Air Force on March 31st. Following his retirement from military service, he transitioned to the private sector, commencing his role with Fly91 in August.
Fly91, a burgeoning regional carrier, will now benefit from the extensive experience and distinguished record of the former IAF officer. His move marks a significant shift from the high-stakes environment of fighter aviation to commercial passenger flights.
A Distinguished Military Career
Abhinandan Varthaman rose to national prominence on February 27, 2019, during a dogfight over the Line of Control. This incident occurred a day after the IAF's retaliatory strikes in Balakot, Pakistan, in response to the Pulwama terror attack.
Then a Wing Commander, Varthaman was piloting a MiG-21 Bison when he engaged a package of Pakistani fighter jets. During the intense aerial combat, he successfully shot down a Pakistani F-16 aircraft, an achievement widely hailed as a rare feat given the generational difference between the two fighter jets. His MiG-21 was subsequently hit, forcing him to eject into enemy territory.
Capture and Return
Varthaman was captured by Pakistani forces after ejecting but was repatriated to India on March 1, 2019, following nearly 60 hours in captivity. His calm demeanor and courage during his capture resonated deeply across the nation.
Vir Chakra Award
In recognition of his exceptional bravery and tactical skill during the aerial engagement, Abhinandan Varthaman was awarded the Vir Chakra in 2021. His citation detailed his courageous engagement against a numerically and technologically superior enemy force, which led to tactical disarray among the adversary's aircraft. The citation specifically highlighted his pursuit and downing of an F-16 before his own aircraft was struck.
