Hyundai Kona Recall Affects Nearly 48,000 Vehicles
Hyundai Motor America has announced a significant safety recall impacting 47,749 Kona and Kona Electric vehicles in the United States. The recall addresses a critical issue with the rear center seat belt buckle, which may fail to properly restrain an occupant during a crash, significantly increasing the risk of injury.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued the recall, advising owners not to use the rear center seat until the necessary remedy is performed. Hyundai has stated that it is not aware of any crashes, injuries, fatalities, or fires related to this defect in the U.S.
Affected Models and Manufacturing Dates
- Kona Gasoline Vehicles: 47,733 units from model year 2026, manufactured between July 8, 2025, and February 13, 2026.
- Kona Electric Vehicles: 16 units from model year 2025, manufactured between July 8, 2025, and October 21, 2025.
Owners can verify if their specific vehicle is included in the Hyundai Kona recall by entering their vehicle identification number (VIN) on the NHTSA recall website or by contacting Hyundai customer service.
Cause of the Defect and Remedy
According to documents filed with NHTSA on July 13, the defect stems from improper maintenance of a stamping die at a supplier's facility. Excessive wear on the tooling resulted in the manufacture of out-of-specification seat belt buckle components. This manufacturing flaw could adversely affect the buckle's performance during a collision.
To resolve the issue, Hyundai dealers will inspect the rear center seat belt buckle assembly and replace it free of charge if necessary. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed starting September 11, 2026.
