Aja Consulting Services LLP, a technology firm based in Hyderabad, has introduced new incentives for its employees to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and carpooling. This move comes in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent appeal for citizens to transition away from petrol and diesel vehicles to conserve fuel.
Green Workplace Movement Launched
The company has initiated a "Green Workplace Movement" which includes a comprehensive EV Policy. Under this policy, employees who purchase a four-wheeler electric vehicle will receive a subsidy of Rs 10,000. Those opting for a two-wheeler electric vehicle will be eligible for a Rs 5,000 subsidy.
Phaniraj Jaligama, CEO of Aja Consulting Services LLP, stated that the initiative aims to support the Prime Minister's vision for sustainable transportation. The company links the policy directly to the pressures of rising fuel prices and concerns about potential shortages, exacerbated by ongoing international conflicts such as the Israel-Iran situation.
PM Modi's Call for Conservation
Prime Minister Modi has actively encouraged various fuel-saving measures. During a public address in Hyderabad on May 10, he urged the re-adoption of practices like work-from-home, online meetings, and video conferencing, noting their effectiveness during the coronavirus pandemic. He emphasized that reviving these systems would be "in the national interest" to conserve fuel.
Wider Industry Response
Aja Consulting is not alone in adapting to the call for fuel conservation. Several major banks in India have also implemented remote or hybrid work arrangements for their employees. HDFC Bank, for instance, announced a work-from-home policy for up to two days a week for employees in specific business and corporate enabling functions, with a review planned after 30 days. Axis Bank has maintained a hybrid work model since FY21 for roles not requiring customer-facing interactions, with customer-facing staff working from the office two days a week.
These corporate responses highlight a growing trend towards sustainable practices and fuel efficiency in the Indian business landscape, driven by both governmental encouragement and economic realities.
