Alan Watts, President of Asia Pacific for Hilton, has declared that India's hospitality sector is poised for a monumental transformation, predicting a tenfold expansion from its current size. Watts, who oversees more than 2,200 hotels across 14 Hilton brands, highlighted India as one of the company's most crucial growth markets.
India's Decade of Hospitality Growth
Watts emphasized that several fundamental shifts have paved the way for this projected boom. Post-Covid, India has consistently demonstrated double-digit year-on-year growth in revenue per available room (REVPAR). This, coupled with significant infrastructure development, a rising consumer class, and a robust domestically driven market, creates an ideal environment for hotel investment.
"I have always personally believed that India can become the third largest lodging market on the planet—the US number one, China at number two, and India at number three. And it has the potential to surpass the US and to rival China in just the volume of rooms," Watts stated in an interview with Business Today.
Historically, India's market saw short cycles of boom and decline, compounded by lengthy construction periods. However, Watts believes the current economic stability and infrastructure build-out signal a sustained growth phase, mirroring the hospitality explosions seen in the US in the 1950s and 60s, and China over the last two decades.
Hilton's Strategic Expansion in India
With 38 hotels currently operating in India, Hilton aims for an ambitious expansion to over 400 properties in the coming years. The company is deploying a calibrated strategy across various price points and demand segments, including luxury, full-service, and mid-market offerings.
Key Brand Introductions and Partnerships:
- Luxury Segment: Introducing Waldorf Astoria (with New Delhi Aerocity expected first, followed by Goa and Jaipur), LXR Hotels & Resorts (Bengaluru), and Signia by Hilton (Jaipur in 2028).
- Mid-Market Segment: Strengthening presence through Hampton by Hilton and Spark by Hilton. Hilton recently signed agreements for 125 Hampton by Hilton properties with Royal Orchid and 75 with NILE Hospitality.
- New Brands for 2026: LXR Hotels & Resorts, Curio Collection by Hilton, and Spark by Hilton are set to debut in India this year.
Hilton is also introducing its successful franchising model to India, a strategy that fueled its rapid expansion in China from five hotels in 2011 to a thousand today. Watts envisions a similar trajectory for India, albeit potentially taking 25% longer due to local construction and land use cycles.
Focus on Domestic Demand and Tier II/III Cities
Watts highlighted the immense potential of India's domestic travel market, which recorded 700 million trips last year, dwarfing the 20-30 million inbound international arrivals. Brands like Hampton by Hilton and Spark by Hilton are strategically positioned to cater to this domestic demand, with their limited-service product making them suitable for both metros and emerging Tier II and III cities—what Watts refers to as "the metros of tomorrow."
The company's approach aims not only to capture market share but also to empower local entrepreneurs. Watts shared that in the US, the largest single last name among Hampton by Hilton owners is Patel, many of whom started with a single property. He envisions a similar path for India, introducing new people to the hospitality industry through franchising.
