The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather update forecasting isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall across the Delhi-NCR region today. This alert comes as a well-marked low-pressure area over central Madhya Pradesh and adjoining southern Uttar Pradesh continues to drive significant monsoon activity across central and northern India.
Gurugram Administration Issues Urgent Advisory
In response to the IMD's nowcast warning, the Gurugram administration has released an urgent public advisory. The forecast indicates heavy rainfall exceeding 15 mm per hour, accompanied by moderate thunderstorms and gusty winds, expected over the next two to three hours. Citizens are strongly advised to avoid all non-essential travel to mitigate risks.
The advisory specifically warns residents to:
- Steer clear of waterlogged roads and underpasses.
- Avoid low-lying and flooded stretches.
- Be cautious around trees, electric poles, and overhead wires.
All concerned departments and emergency response agencies have been directed to maintain vigilance and implement necessary precautionary measures.
Broader Regional Monsoon Outlook
Beyond Delhi-NCR, the active monsoon system is expected to bring widespread rainfall across several other parts of India:
Northwest India
- Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad: Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning on September 4.
- Himachal Pradesh: Similar conditions during September 4-5.
- Uttarakhand: Widespread rainfall from September 4 to September 10.
- East Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi: Expected to experience similar conditions through September 4-5.
- West Uttar Pradesh: Rainfall from September 4 to September 6.
- East Uttar Pradesh: Rainfall during September 6-8.
Isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh in the early part of the week. Isolated very heavy rainfall is also likely over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on September 4, and over East Rajasthan on September 4-5.
Central India
Extended monsoon activity is forecast for Central India:
- West Madhya Pradesh: Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning during September 4-6.
- East Madhya Pradesh: Similar conditions continuing through September 8.
- Chhattisgarh: Widespread rain on September 4 and again from September 8 to September 10.
Isolated very heavy rainfall is predicted for West Madhya Pradesh on September 4-5 and East Madhya Pradesh on September 4.
East India
Consistent precipitation is expected over the coming week:
- Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with lightning from September 4 to September 10.
- Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha: Recurring spells of widespread showers.
Isolated heavy rainfall is likely in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim through September 8, and Bihar during September 5-8.
Northeast, West & Southern India
- Northeast India: Widespread rain and thunderstorms across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from September 4 through September 8, with isolated heavy rainfall likely across all northeastern states through September 10.
- West India: Konkan and Goa are set for fairly widespread to widespread rainfall through September 10. Gujarat Region, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Saurashtra & Kutch will mostly experience isolated to scattered rainfall.
- Southern Peninsular India: Largely subdued activity, with isolated to scattered rainfall expected across Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Kerala & Mahe, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, and Telangana during September 4-10. Coastal Karnataka is an exception, with fairly widespread to widespread rainfall expected.
Additionally, strong surface winds reaching 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are forecast for Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, and Tamil Nadu on September 4-5.
