HDFC Pension Sees "Steady Pick-Up" in NPS Accounts Among Gig Workers

· · 2 min read

HDFC Pension Fund Management reports a significant increase in gig workers opening National Pension System (NPS) accounts, with over 3 lakh subscribers from platforms like Zomato and Urban Company. This surge follows partnerships and the flexible NPS e-Shramik model.

India's gig economy workers are increasingly turning to the National Pension System (NPS) for their retirement savings, according to Sriram Iyer, MD and CEO of HDFC Pension Fund Management. The company has observed a "big pick-up" in NPS subscribers from this segment, driven by strategic partnerships with leading platform companies.

NPS e-Shramik Model Boosts Adoption

HDFC Pension has successfully onboarded over 3 lakh gig workers onto the NPS through collaborations with platforms such as Zomato, Urban Company, and Goa Miles. The firm is also in discussions with more aggregators, including a recent tie-up with Yes Madam, to expand this reach further.

This growing adoption is largely attributed to the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority's (PFRDA) NPS e-Shramik (Platform Service Partner) Model, launched last October. This model addresses the critical need for social security and retirement planning for gig workers, who often operate outside traditional employment frameworks.

Flexible Contributions and Simplified Process

A key feature of the NPS e-Shramik model is its inherent flexibility. It boasts no minimum or maximum contribution thresholds, allowing both the platform aggregator and the individual worker to determine a suitable minimum contribution for each credit instance to the pension account. Furthermore, the onboarding and Know Your Customer (KYC) processes have been streamlined to ensure ease of access for gig workers.

Iyer emphasized the importance of tailored approaches to reach diverse segments of society. While corporate NPS schemes have seen robust adoption, he noted that retail individual NPS accounts require more targeted awareness campaigns and communication strategies. HDFC Pension is now exploring new avenues, including potential partnerships with milk cooperatives, to bring more members into the retirement savings fold.
