A long-delayed infrastructure project in New Gurugram is finally moving forward, with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini granting approval for a Rs 29 crore, six-lane road corridor. This crucial 2.4-kilometer stretch, which has been stuck in limbo since 2016, is set to begin construction in the first week of August, following the formal awarding of the contract.
Addressing Persistent Gridlock and Safety Concerns
The road in question runs between Naurangpur and Rampura Chowk, connecting through Sectors 78, 79, and 80 on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. Despite being a vital artery for local traffic and vehicles heading towards Tauru and Nuh along NH-8, the existing road is a mere 5.5 meters wide in places, narrowing further along its route. This inadequate width has led to daily traffic gridlock, extended travel times, and heightened safety concerns for commuters in the rapidly developing area.
Project Details and Scope
The redesigned corridor will be built within an 84-meter right of way, featuring a main carriageway spanning 9.9 meters. To improve local access, 5.5-meter service roads will run along both sides. The comprehensive upgrade also includes the construction of a central median, designated footpaths, and robust surface drainage infrastructure. The new drainage system is specifically designed to tackle the persistent waterlogging issues that have plagued the area for years.
Officials anticipate the entire project will take approximately two years to complete from the commencement of construction. The government's financial approval marks a significant step towards alleviating the current traffic woes and improving connectivity for the growing residential sectors.
The Long Road to Approval
The project's nearly decade-long delay stemmed from a combination of factors. Although landowners along the proposed alignment were compensated as early as 2016, the initiative stalled due to widespread encroachments along the route and a series of administrative obstacles. Progress resumed only last year, after authorities successfully cleared the encroachments and completed the demarcation of the right of way, removing the primary impediments to construction.
The High-Powered Purchase Works Committee provided the final clearance for the project during a meeting held earlier this week.
Residents Express Relief and Hope
For residents who have endured years of inconvenience, the approval is a welcome development. Dhirender Singh, a resident of Mapsko Mount Ville, highlighted the long-standing issues. "The project has been pending for years. People have been allowed to move into these sectors, but the road was never upgraded, causing daily inconvenience," Singh stated. He further added, "With more residential projects coming up, the road is in a very poor condition and sees heavy movement of dumpers, creating traffic and dust pollution. It is good that the work will finally begin, but the authorities must ensure it is completed within the stipulated timeline."
