Gujarat Unveils ₹547 Cr Plan for Spine Hospital, College After AI171 Crash

· · 2 min read

The Gujarat government announced a ₹547 crore redevelopment plan to transform the AI171 crash site in Ahmedabad into a major healthcare and education hub. This initiative includes a new spine hospital, physiotherapy college, and 510 hostel units, one year after the tragic accident.

One year after the tragic Air India flight AI171 crash that claimed 260 lives, the Gujarat government has unveiled a comprehensive ₹547 crore redevelopment project. The plan aims to transform the crash site at the New Mental Campus in Ahmedabad into a state-of-the-art healthcare and education hub, replacing the damaged infrastructure with modern facilities.

On June 12, 2025, flight AI171 crashed into student hostels and mess buildings within the campus, adjacent to Asarwa Civil Hospital. The incident caused extensive damage to residential and academic structures, including four married post-graduate hostel blocks, displacing numerous students and staff.

Gujarat Health Minister Praful Panseria, speaking on the anniversary, paid tribute to the victims and emphasized the government's commitment to converting the tragedy's memory into a purposeful legacy. He stated the redevelopment would create a "sanctuary of health and education that will herald a new era in healthcare and inspire new hopes for medical students."

Comprehensive Redevelopment Plan

The New Mental Campus, spanning 1,71,100 square metres, previously featured substantial residential and academic infrastructure built between 2015 and 2016. All structures damaged in the crash will be fully demolished to clear the land for the new development.

Phase One: Crash Site Transformation

The initial phase directly targets approximately 25,000 square metres of the crash site. This area will house a new Paraplegia and Spine Hospital, a dedicated rehabilitation centre, a physiotherapy college, and a 500-student hostel. The current year's budget has allocated ₹175 crore for the rehabilitation centre, physiotherapy college, and hostel, with an additional ₹120 crore for the Paraplegia and Spine Hospital, totaling ₹295 crore for this zone alone.

Student Housing and Infrastructure Expansion

Beyond the immediate crash zone, the redevelopment includes significant upgrades to student accommodation and essential facilities:

  • New Married Post-Graduate Hostels: Adjacent to the existing Sopanam Hostel, eight new ground-plus-seven blocks will be constructed, providing 510 units for married post-graduate students. This component has an estimated cost of ₹192 crore.
  • Food and Drugs Laboratory: A new ground-plus-multistorey Food and Drugs Laboratory, modeled after the NABL-approved facility in Vadodara, will be built on approximately 3,100 square metres of campus land. The project has a budget provision of ₹28.31 crore for 2025-26, with an estimated final cost of ₹50 crore.
  • Dining Facility: A new dining facility designed to accommodate around 800 students is also planned, with an estimated cost of ₹10 crore.

This extensive project underscores Gujarat's commitment to enhancing its healthcare and educational infrastructure, turning a site of profound loss into a beacon of progress and hope.
