Shares of Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd. experienced a significant jump in Wednesday's trading, climbing 5.59 percent to reach a high of Rs 173.75 on the BSE. This surge followed an announcement that the company had received a 'Comfort Letter' from the Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) regarding its proposal to extend the port's concession period.
The 'Comfort Letter' marks a crucial step in the potential extension of the port's operational rights. Under its terms, Gujarat Pipavav Port is required to submit a comprehensive set of information and documents to the GMB within 90 days. This includes a detailed record of its performance during the current concession period, alongside a robust Investment and Business Plan for the proposed extended period.
Details of the Concession Agreement
Gujarat Pipavav Port Ltd., incorporated in August 1992, is responsible for the construction, operation, and maintenance of an all-weather port situated at Pipavav, in the Amreli District of Gujarat. The port is equipped to handle various types of cargo, including bulk, container, liquid, and RORO (Roll-on/Roll-off), and provides essential port services such as marine operations, material handling, and storage.
The company initially entered into a 30-year Concession Agreement with the Government of Gujarat and the Gujarat Maritime Board on September 30, 1998. This agreement established a Build Own Operate Transfer (BOOT) framework for the port's development, construction, operation, and maintenance.
