Gujarat initially implemented the ban in September 2012, following regulations from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) that empower states to restrict food products containing tobacco or nicotine. Gutkha is a form of smokeless tobacco, typically composed of tobacco leaves, areca nut, and other additives. Both tobacco and nicotine are widely recognized for their severe health implications, including a heightened risk of oral cancer and other tobacco-related illnesses.
Moreover, the areca nut, a common ingredient in gutkha and many paan preparations, has also been linked to adverse health effects. Public health initiatives frequently target the reduction of smokeless tobacco consumption, particularly among younger populations, to mitigate these risks.
