Graphite India Limited has confirmed its German management's decision to discontinue and close the operations of its Specialities and Coating divisions. The move comes as a direct consequence of the prolonged impact of the Russia-Ukraine war and persistently weak market demand affecting the competitiveness of these specific German business units.
Graphite India's Strategic Shift in Germany
The company, a prominent manufacturer of graphite electrodes and carbon and graphite speciality products, stated that the local management in Germany initiated the closure of these divisions and their associated service activities. This strategic decision aims to address the challenging economic environment that has significantly hampered the performance of these particular segments.
Impact of Geopolitical Events and Market Conditions
Graphite India explicitly cited the "lasting impact of Russia Ukraine war and weak demand" as the primary factors adversely affecting the competitiveness of its Graphite Specialities and Coating divisions in Germany. The closure process is estimated to take approximately six months, contingent on ongoing discussions with the local Works Council.
Financial Overview of Affected Divisions
Providing a financial perspective, Graphite India disclosed that the affected German management entity contributed INR 1,05,29,07,925 to the company's consolidated turnover for the financial year 2025-26, representing 4% of the total. Furthermore, the unit recorded a negative net worth of INR (3,22,52,74,216) as of March 31, 2026, which amounted to -6% of the company's overall consolidated net worth of INR 5859 crores. This indicates a significant drain on the company's resources from these operations.
Market Reaction and Company Profile
Following the announcement, Graphite India's stock closed 4.02% lower at Rs 579.60 on Wednesday. The company's shares traded below key moving averages, reflecting investor reaction to the news. Graphite India operates across three main segments: Graphite and carbon, steel, and others, manufacturing a diverse range of products including graphite electrodes, graphite equipment, steel, glass reinforced plastic (GRP) pipes and tanks, and also engaging in hydel power generation.
