Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin have significantly expanded their real estate portfolios in South Florida, collectively investing more than $225 million in luxury Miami properties. This substantial financial move occurs as California considers implementing a new wealth tax, a proposal that has reportedly influenced several high-profile billionaires to relocate or shift business interests.
Larry Page's acquisitions alone total approximately $188 million over the past year. Notable among these is the $101.5 million Banyan Ridge estate in Coconut Grove, marking one of Miami's most expensive residential purchases to date. He has also acquired another nearby waterfront property. Sergey Brin, meanwhile, added a $51 million waterfront mansion in Miami Beach to his growing South Florida holdings.
Beyond personal investments, Alphabet, Google's parent company, has also quadrupled its office footprint in Miami. The company expanded its satellite office from 10,000 square feet to approximately 45,000 square feet at 1450 Brickell Avenue, located in Miami's bustling financial district. This corporate expansion is partly driven by the increased presence of the founders in the region, signaling a broader commitment to South Florida.
The backdrop to this migration is California's proposed ballot measure, which aims to tax the assets of its ultra-wealthy residents. In contrast, Florida offers a significant incentive with no state income tax, making it an attractive destination for high-net-worth individuals seeking to minimize their tax burden. While Page and Brin stepped down from executive roles in 2019, they maintain positions on Alphabet's board and retain majority voting control.
Page and Brin are part of a wider trend of technology billionaires flocking to South Florida. Other prominent figures, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Palantir CEO Alex Karp, have also made substantial investments in Miami-area properties or expanded their business operations in the region. This influx of capital and talent reinforces Miami's burgeoning reputation as a significant emerging hub for technology and finance.
