Gold & Silver Prices Mixed as Fed Outlook, Inflation Data Weigh Heavily

· · 2 min read

Precious metals saw mixed trading Tuesday as investors awaited US inflation data and Federal Reserve interest rate decisions. The US dollar's strength and crude oil prices continue to influence gold and silver's trajectory.

Precious metals experienced mixed trading on Tuesday as global markets reacted to ongoing uncertainty surrounding the US dollar's strength, crude oil prices, and the Federal Reserve's anticipated interest rate decisions. Investors are particularly focused on upcoming US inflation data for clearer direction.

Market Performance Overview

In international markets, gold futures were up slightly by 0.40%, reaching $4,207 per ounce. Silver futures also saw a modest gain of 0.23%, trading at $60 per ounce. Conversely, domestic Indian markets showed slight declines.

  • MCX gold futures were down 0.03% to ₹1,49,502 per 10 grams.
  • MCX silver futures declined 0.12% to ₹2,22,600 per kilogram.

Key Factors Influencing Prices

Analysts point to several critical factors exerting pressure on gold and silver prices. Sugandha Sachdeva, Founder of SS WealthStreet, highlighted that "the strengthening greenback, coupled with persistent uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve's interest rate trajectory, has been exerting downward pressure on precious metals, restricting their ability to stage a meaningful recovery."

Furthermore, elevated crude oil prices contribute to concerns about energy-driven inflation. If inflation remains high, it could prompt the US Federal Reserve to maintain a restrictive monetary policy for an extended period, which typically weighs on non-yielding assets like gold.

Market attention is now primarily fixed on the release of the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) data. A higher-than-expected inflation figure could bolster the dollar and depress bullion prices. Conversely, softer inflation could ease pressure on the dollar and bond yields, potentially offering support to both gold and silver.

Support and Resistance Levels to Watch

For traders and investors, specific technical levels are crucial for monitoring potential price movements:

International Gold

  • Support: $4,100 per ounce
  • Resistance: $4,240 per ounce

Domestic MCX Gold

  • Support: ₹1,48,000 per 10 grams
  • Resistance: ₹1,51,500 per 10 grams

International Silver

  • Support: $58.50 per ounce
  • Resistance: $62.50 per ounce

Domestic MCX Silver

  • Support: ₹2,17,500 per kilogram

The future trajectory of gold and silver prices will largely depend on the evolving inflation data, the strength of the US dollar, crude oil price fluctuations, and the Federal Reserve's monetary policy outlook. These technical levels serve as indicators rather than guaranteed targets.
