Agritech's New Phase: Embedding Technology in Daily Farming

The Indian agritech sector is undergoing a significant evolution, with renewed investor interest and a strategic shift in focus. Sunil Kataria, CEO & MD of Godrej Agrovet, emphasizes that the coming decade will be less about introducing new technologies and more about seamlessly integrating existing and emerging solutions into the daily operational decisions of farmers.

India's Digital Agricultural Transformation

India's agricultural landscape is in the midst of a profound digital transformation. Factors like widespread smartphone penetration, affordable mobile data, and robust digital public infrastructure are accelerating technology adoption among farmers. Government initiatives, such as AgriStack, have already created over 84 million farmer IDs, while the Digital Crop Survey now covers more than 285 million plots, laying a critical foundation for data-driven agriculture. Kataria notes that 60-70% of smallholders currently receive weather and pest information digitally, with AI-driven advisories gaining traction.

Integration and Collaboration Over Disruption

The initial phase of agritech was characterized by startups developing standalone solutions across various areas like advisory services, marketplaces, and logistics. Kataria believes the next decade will be defined by integration and collaboration within the broader agricultural and food ecosystems. Farmers' success is dependent on interconnected factors, from quality inputs and scientific advisories to financing, market access, and consumer demand. Embedding technological solutions within these existing frameworks is crucial for sustainable scaling.

Tackling Climate Risks with Technology

While challenges like productivity, market access, and income volatility persist, climate risk is increasingly becoming the overarching concern for farmers, particularly smallholders. Climate variability directly impacts productivity, pest incidence, water availability, and input efficiency. Technology offers a significant opportunity to build resilience against these risks by enabling farmers to transition from reactive to predictive decision-making. Effective solutions, according to Kataria, combine technology with last-mile agronomy and direct farmer engagement, ensuring insights are accessible, affordable, and actionable.

Opportunities in Connected Value Chains

The biggest opportunities in Indian agriculture lie in connecting all facets of the value chain: improving farm-level productivity, strengthening post-harvest infrastructure, building food brands, and creating more efficient overall value chains. By linking these elements, substantial gains can be unlocked. Changing consumer preferences are also creating new avenues for traceable supply chains, value-added products, and nutrition-focused offerings. Ultimately, successful agritech solutions must be designed around the realities and needs of farmers, rather than solely on technological possibilities.
