Indian Equities Brace for Cautious Start
Indian benchmark equity indices are expected to open on a cautious note today, Tuesday, September 1, 2026, as GIFT Nifty Futures on the NSE International Exchange were down 66.40 points, or 0.27 per cent, at 24,185. This indicates a negative beginning for the domestic market. While supportive domestic fundamentals, including robust GDP numbers, offer some stability, an unsettled global backdrop dominated by rising crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions is likely to temper investor enthusiasm.
Global Factors Influence Sentiment
Global cues from Monday's trading sessions show a weakening trend. US stocks closed lower as Wall Street navigated a volatile month, with a war-related surge in crude prices reigniting inflation fears and increasing the likelihood of tighter monetary policy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.70 per cent, the S&P 500 lost 0.33 per cent, and the Nasdaq Composite shed 0.12 per cent.
Asian markets also reflected this cautious sentiment in early trade, with Hang Seng losing over one per cent, and Nikkei and Hang Seng shedding nearly half a per cent each.
Rising Crude Prices and Geopolitical Tensions
A significant factor impacting global and Indian markets is the renewed US-Iran tensions. Brent crude futures topped $91 a barrel in Asian morning trade after fresh US strikes on Iran, reversing earlier easing and bringing inflation, the rupee's stability, and external balances back into focus for traders.
Ajit Mishra, SVP of Research at Religare Broking, noted that the sell-off was triggered by this escalation, driving crude oil prices higher and reigniting inflation concerns. Investors are advised to maintain a cautious stance with light positions and strict risk management.
Key Economic Data and Market Drivers
Domestically, investors will closely monitor India’s Q1FY27 GDP figures, auto sales data, and Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) readings for further direction. Other global commodities saw varied movements: the 10-year US Treasury yield rose 2.2 basis points to 4.78 per cent, the dollar index eased to 99.37, spot gold held steady at $4,454.68 per ounce, and Bitcoin was up 0.6 per cent near $78,300.
FII-DII Activity and Market Flows
Provisional data from the NSE indicates that Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) were net sellers of domestic stocks on Monday, offloading shares worth Rs 7,985.88 crore. Conversely, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) showed buying interest, acquiring Indian equities worth Rs 4,588.88 crore on a net basis.
Nifty50, Sensex, and India VIX Analysis
The short-term market outlook remains weak, according to Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research at Kotak Securities. However, he suggests that if the market manages to trade above 24,000 for Nifty50 and 76,600 for Sensex, a quick technical pullback could be seen towards 24,200-24,300 and 77,300-77,500 respectively. A sustained fall below these levels, however, could accelerate selling pressure, potentially pushing Nifty to 23,850-23,800 and Sensex to 76,300-76,000.
Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, observed that Nifty50 found initial resistance around recent lows, but the Relative Strength Index (RSI) has formed a positive divergence on the hourly chart, hinting at a near-term pullback towards 24,180–24,200. A sustained move above 24,200 could trigger a further 100-point rise, while support is placed at 23,990, a break below which could resume the correction.
The India VIX, a measure of market volatility, rose 4.78 per cent to 11.19, indicating a marginal increase in hedging activity and caution, even though overall volatility remains at relatively comfortable levels, as per Dhupesh Dhameja, Derivatives Research Analyst at SAMCO Securities.
Nifty Bank Outlook
Nifty Bank formed a bullish candle, signaling buying demand from its 50-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA). Bajaj Broking Research notes that it faces resistance around 58,000. A sustained move above this level could open upside towards 58,500-58,700, while failure to sustain above 58,000 might lead to consolidation within the 57,000-58,000 range.
Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, highlighted that Nifty Bank saw a sharp surge during the closing auction session but has remained range-bound within a 1075-point band over the past 19 trading sessions, indicating a lack of clear directional trend. The technical setup suggests a consolidation phase, with key momentum indicators pointing sideways. Immediate resistance for the index is seen in the 58,200-58,300 zone, with important support at 57,500-57,400.
