GIFT City, India's pioneering International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in Gujarat, has achieved a significant milestone, climbing nine places to rank 37th globally in the 40th edition of the Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI 40). This marks a substantial improvement from its previous 46th position.
The latest GFCI report also highlights GIFT City's emergence as a key player in the Asia-Pacific region, where it now stands among the top 15 financial centres. Notably, it is the only Indian financial hub to secure a place within this elite group.
Advancements in FinTech and Future Outlook
Beyond its overall ranking, GIFT City has also seen considerable progress in its global FinTech standing. It advanced three spots to 26th worldwide in GFCI 40, up from 29th in the previous edition. This improvement underscores the city's commitment to fostering a robust FinTech ecosystem.
The GFCI report identifies several critical factors contributing to a competitive FinTech centre, including an innovation-supporting environment, ready access to finance, a pool of skilled talent, a clear regulatory framework, and advanced ICT infrastructure. GIFT City's focus on these areas has clearly paid dividends.
Furthermore, the report projects GIFT City as one of 15 financial centres globally expected to gain increased significance over the next two to three years, an assessment based on responses from survey participants. This forward-looking recognition reflects the ongoing expansion of its financial services ecosystem and the deeper integration of finance, technology, and innovation within its framework.
Strategic Priorities for Continued Growth
Looking ahead, GIFT City aims to deepen market participation, strengthen its international connectivity, and develop enhanced capabilities to support increasingly sophisticated cross-border financial activities. These strategic priorities are aligned with the broader recommendations from the GFCI 40 report for financial centres worldwide.
Key areas of focus highlighted by the report for the next five years include investing in advanced digital infrastructure such as cloud services, data connectivity, and cybersecurity resilience. Attracting FinTech and digital asset businesses, bolstering anti-money laundering (AML) and financial crime frameworks, and deepening capital markets are also identified as crucial for future growth and competitiveness.
Understanding the Global Financial Centres Index
The Global Financial Centres Index is a comprehensive assessment that combines qualitative evaluations from financial-sector professionals with a wide array of quantitative instrumental factors. The GFCI 40 edition, for instance, drew upon 144 instrumental factors and incorporated 39,531 individual assessments and responses from 6,147 participants who completed the GFCI online questionnaire.
GIFT City is strategically positioned as a global hub for financial and IT services, offering a complete urban environment that includes office and residential spaces, alongside educational institutions, healthcare facilities, hospitality, retail, and recreational amenities. Its advanced infrastructure features a District Cooling System, an Automated Waste Collection System, and a Utility Tunnel, designed to support a modern, sustainable urban ecosystem.
