Fuel consumers in India are navigating continued price volatility as compressed natural gas (CNG) rates saw increases in key metropolitan areas on May 31, 2026. Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) raised CNG prices by ₹2 per kilogram across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai. This latest revision brings the retail price to ₹86 per kg, marking the second such hike in MMR within a month.
Similarly, Delhi experienced a recent ₹2 per kg increase in CNG prices, pushing the retail cost to ₹83.09 per kg. These adjustments come amidst persistent global energy supply concerns exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, particularly the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which significantly impacts India's import-dependent fuel market.
LPG and PNG Rates Hold Steady
In contrast to CNG, prices for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) remained stable across major Indian cities as of May 31. While LPG continues to be a primary cooking fuel for many households, CNG and PNG are increasingly recognized as more stable and economical alternatives, particularly for transportation and residential use.

The central government had previously delayed fuel price revisions, implementing increases approximately two weeks after Assembly elections in states like Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. To mitigate the impact of rising costs, the government continues to offer subsidies under schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), which has provided over 10 crore low-income families with gas connections, helping to reduce their effective fuel expenses.
