From Dropout to Billionaire: P.C. Musthafa's iD Fresh Food Valued at ₹4,450 Crore

· · 2 min read

P.C. Musthafa, founder of iD Fresh Food, transformed from a Class 6 dropout working on plantations to leading a company valued at ₹4,450 crore. His journey began in a remote Kerala village, overcoming poverty to build a household brand.

The remarkable journey of P.C. Musthafa, the visionary behind Bengaluru-based iD Fresh Food, stands as a testament to resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. From humble beginnings as a school dropout working on coffee plantations in Kerala, Musthafa has built a packaged food empire now valued at approximately ₹4,450 crore.

Early Life and Overcoming Adversity

Born in Chennalode, a remote village in Kerala's Wayanad district, Musthafa faced significant challenges from an early age. His father worked as a coolie, and the family subsisted on a meager income, often less than ₹10 a day. After failing Class 6, young Musthafa was compelled to leave school and join his father in the fields.

A pivotal moment occurred when a compassionate school teacher discovered Musthafa working and persuaded his parents to allow him to return to education, even covering the cost of his books. Seizing this second chance, Musthafa excelled academically, eventually earning a degree from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut and a management degree from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bengaluru. He later worked as a software engineer before embarking on his entrepreneurial path.

The Genesis of iD Fresh Food

The inspiration for iD Fresh Food struck Musthafa during a conversation with his cousin Shamsuddin, who observed the lack of hygienically packaged idli and dosa batter in local markets. In 2005, Musthafa invested his entire savings of ₹25,000 and collaborated with five cousins to launch the business. Their initial setup was modest: a 550-square-foot facility equipped with two grinders, a mixer, and a sealing machine, with a total investment of ₹50,000.

Growth and Future Aspirations

The early days were arduous, with sales taking nearly nine months to reach 100 packets a day. However, persistence paid off, and demand for iD Fresh Food's fresh batter and ready-to-cook products steadily grew. Today, the company operates in over 100 cities across India, reporting revenues of approximately ₹680 crore in FY25. iD Fresh Food has maintained an impressive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 20% over the past five years and aims to achieve ₹2,500 crore in revenue within the next four years.

iD Fresh Food is currently valued at around ₹4,450 crore, with P.C. Musthafa's personal stake estimated at ₹1,140 crore, according to Tracxn data. Musthafa frequently shares his inspiring story, emphasizing that humble beginnings or academic setbacks do not dictate one's future, encouraging young aspirants to pursue their dreams with determination.
