The Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, announced the imminent formation of a high-level committee dedicated to the Indian banking sector. Speaking at the PSB Confluence 2026 in New Delhi on August 17, 2026, Sitharaman emphasized the opportune timing for such a review, citing significant improvements in the sector's asset quality.

This initiative is a critical step towards realizing the "Viksit Bharat 2047" vision, aiming to invigorate the Indian economy. The government anticipates that the committee's recommendations will provide a clear roadmap for pressing forward with vital economic reforms.

The Department of Financial Services has identified several key areas for the committee's focus. These include strategies for deposit mobilization, enhancing banking services for youth, optimizing the investment cycle, bolstering agriculture infrastructure, refining priority sector lending, leveraging global capacity centers (GCCs), and innovating the credit card business landscape.
