Fintech Shares Rebound as UPI MDR Rollout Delayed Post-Diwali

· · 2 min read

Shares of Paytm, Pine Labs, and One Mobikwik rebounded sharply after initial falls. NPCI announced the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) for select UPI person-to-merchant transactions over Rs 2,000 will be implemented after Diwali, delaying the previously set October 15 date.

Fintech stocks, including One 97 Communications Ltd (Paytm), One Mobikwik Systems Ltd, and Pine Labs Ltd, experienced a significant rebound today. This recovery followed an announcement from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) that the implementation of a Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on specific person-to-merchant (P2M) UPI transactions would be delayed until after the Diwali festive season.

Initial Market Reaction and Subsequent Recovery

Earlier in the day, shares of these fintech giants saw considerable drops. Paytm shares plunged over 6% to Rs 1,570.40, while Pine Labs and One Mobikwik Systems both fell by nearly 4%. The initial dip was a knee-jerk reaction to market speculation and earlier reports, including one suggesting a January 1, 2027, implementation date for the MDR.

However, the market quickly corrected itself after NPCI's clarification. Paytm shares, though still trading lower, recovered significantly from their low. Pine Labs turned positive, trading 1.26% higher, and One Mobikwik Systems Ltd notably climbed over 3% to Rs 247.90 by the end of Tuesday's trade.

Details of the UPI MDR Delay

The UPI and Services Steering Committee made the decision to defer the MDR rollout, citing the ongoing festive season. The Merchant Discount Rate, set at up to 0.4%, applies to UPI P2M transactions exceeding Rs 2,000. An earlier announcement had set October 15 as the implementation date, which has now been postponed, with a new date to be notified separately.

The introduction of MDR on large-ticket UPI transactions is widely viewed as a crucial catalyst for enhancing fintech companies' profitability, transforming a previously free service into a revenue stream for payment service providers.

Impact on Fintech Profitability

For companies like Paytm, the delayed but eventual implementation of MDR is significant. UPI P2M transactions constitute a substantial 85% of Paytm's Gross Merchandise Value (GMV), with approximately 35% of this value being eligible for MDR. This revenue stream is expected to bolster their financial performance once fully active.

Similarly, for Pine Labs, market analysts at Emkay had previously estimated UPI P2M Gross Transaction Value (GTV) to reach Rs 3 lakh crore by FY28. Of this, a substantial 86% by value is expected to fall above the Rs 2,000 threshold, leading to an MDR-eligible GTV of Rs 2.58 lakh crore, representing 10% of their overall Digital In-Store Payments (DITP) GTV.

While the delay offers temporary relief and a market rebound, the long-term outlook for these fintech firms remains positive, anticipating increased profitability from the future MDR implementation.
