Despite a global shift towards viewing COVID-19 as an endemic disease, medical experts firmly caution against equating it with the seasonal flu. While widespread immunity has reduced the severity of infection for many, the virus continues to pose a significant threat, particularly to vulnerable populations, leading to hospitalizations and deaths.
Why COVID-19 Remains Different from Seasonal Flu
According to experts like Dr. Rajni Kant, ICMR Chair for Disease Elimination, COVID-19's endemic status does not mean it has become harmless. "Widespread vaccination and previous exposure to the virus have helped build immunity in the population, which is why the infection is generally less severe in healthy individuals. However, people with comorbidities, the elderly, and other high-risk groups remain vulnerable to severe disease," he stated. Dr. Randeep Guleria, Chairman of Internal Medicine at Medanta Hospital, echoed this, noting that while the illness level isn't what it was during earlier waves, dismissing it as just another seasonal flu would be a mistake. Patients requiring ICU care are still being admitted, especially those with weakened immunity or underlying conditions.
The shared symptoms between COVID-19 and influenza, such as fever, cough, and fatigue, can be misleading. While symptoms may be similar, the underlying risks and viral behavior differ substantially. Unlike the relatively stable influenza virus, SARS-CoV-2 continues its rapid evolution, constantly generating new variants.
The Evolving Threat: New Variants and Vulnerability
The continuous evolution of SARS-CoV-2 is a key factor distinguishing it from seasonal flu. New variants, including NB.1.8.1 and other descendants of the JN.1 lineage, demonstrate high transmission rates. Dr. Neha Rastogi, Senior Consultant in Infectious Diseases at Fortis Hospital, Gurugram, highlighted that while these variants haven't shown increased severity, infections persist due to waning immunity and ongoing viral changes. This constant evolution allows the virus to circulate even among those with prior immunity.
Older adults, immunocompromised individuals, and those with significant comorbidities remain at elevated risk for severe illness. For these groups, the virus can still lead to serious complications, making vigilance crucial.
Continued Vigilance and Public Health Preparedness
India has transitioned from an emergency response to a long-term management strategy for COVID-19, focusing on protecting vulnerable populations and strengthening genomic sequencing. Despite this, the virus continues to circulate. Official data indicates over 4.5 crore confirmed COVID-19 cases and more than 5.3 lakh deaths in India since 2020. Recent months have seen sporadic infections and occasional deaths, including localized clusters that prompted further genomic sequencing to identify newer variants.
Experts emphasize that early identification of symptoms, timely testing, and appropriate preventive measures, including booster vaccinations for immunocompromised individuals, remain vital. Continued genomic surveillance and the protection of high-risk groups must remain public health priorities. The message is clear: while the pandemic's emergency phase may be over, the threat of COVID-19 has not diminished to that of a common cold or seasonal flu.
