Expert Advises Selling Voltas on Rebound, Holding Lupin for Relief Rally

· · 3 min read

Market expert Rachit Khandelwal advises investors to exit Voltas on any rebound due to high metal costs and interest rate sensitivity. He suggests holding Lupin, anticipating a relief rally once it breaks key resistance levels.

Investors holding shares in consumer durables firm Voltas and pharmaceutical major Lupin face diverging advice from market expert Rachit Khandelwal, Head of Research at BNK Capital Group. On a recent segment of Business Today’s Daily Calls, Khandelwal outlined distinct strategies for the two stocks, underscoring the uneven impact of sectoral headwinds across portfolios.

Voltas Faces Persistent Headwinds

Khandelwal indicated that Voltas continues to grapple with significant margin and demand pressures within the consumer durables sector. Despite the approaching festive quarter, typically a period of strong consumption, he sees little relief for the company. Elevated metal prices, a key input cost, coupled with a lack of clear visibility for a meaningful recovery, are dampening prospects.

He noted that the usual festive demand might not be sufficient to offset the stress from higher input costs and tighter financial conditions. Consequently, investors should not anticipate the customary third-quarter upside from Voltas shares this year.

Exit Strategy for Voltas

A primary concern for Voltas, according to Khandelwal, is its sensitivity to interest rates and liquidity tightening. These factors, combined with ongoing pricing issues, reduce the likelihood of a sharp rerating in the near term. He explicitly advised investors to consider exiting Voltas if the stock rebounds into the Rs 1,160 to Rs 1,240 range, stating there is “no good reason for us to believe that it might even cross these levels” decisively.

Lupin Shows Rebound Potential

In contrast, Khandelwal adopted a more optimistic stance on Lupin. While the stock has underperformed, causing disappointment for investors who bought at higher levels, he asserts that the underlying business case for the pharma giant remains robust and does not warrant panic. He described Lupin as a “good stock,” though he cautioned against averaging down at current levels, given the insufficient gap between current and previous buy prices to justify such a strategy.

Key Levels for Lupin's Rally

For Lupin investors, patience is key. Khandelwal advised watching for a decisive breakout above the Rs 2,190 to Rs 2,230 band. Should this occur, he anticipates a “decent relief rally” to commence. If this momentum is sustained, the stock could potentially climb to Rs 2,500 over the subsequent one to two quarters, making Lupin a recommended hold for now.

Contrasting Investment Approaches

The expert's analysis presents a clear dichotomy: Voltas is positioned as an exit-on-strength opportunity, while Lupin is viewed as a wait-for-recovery bet. This highlights the importance of tailored investment strategies based on specific company fundamentals and prevailing market conditions.
