Essar Power is investing ₹4,500 crore in a 300 MW hybrid renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh. The facility, developed with NHPC, will integrate solar, wind, and battery storage to provide firm, dispatchable power.

Essar Power has announced a significant investment of approximately ₹4,500 crore (around $540 million USD) into a new 300 MW hybrid renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh. This initiative, spearheaded by its renewable energy arm, Essar Renewables Limited (ERL), follows the signing of a crucial Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with NHPC Limited.

Hybrid Energy for Reliable Supply

The ambitious project is designed to combine solar and wind power generation with advanced Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This integration aims to deliver reliable and dispatchable renewable electricity, crucial for meeting India’s growing energy demands. By operating under the Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) model, the facility will ensure power is available precisely when needed, enhancing grid stability.

Srinivasan Vaidyanathan, Operating Partner - Infrastructure, Essar Group, highlighted the importance of such projects. “As India advances towards the vision of Viksit Bharat, building a reliable and sustainable energy ecosystem will be critical to supporting its ambitions,” he stated, emphasizing Essar’s commitment to new technologies in the energy sector.

Part of a Larger Green Portfolio

This 300 MW project is a key component of Essar Power’s broader strategy to establish a 5 GW energy portfolio, encompassing renewable, thermal, and gas-based power generation. Ankur Kumar, CEO of Essar Power, noted that the company is actively building a diverse portfolio across solar, wind, and battery storage technologies, marking the NHPC collaboration as an important milestone.

Essar Renewables has already secured approximately 1 GW of aggregate capacity through major renewable energy tenders from central public sector undertakings, including NHPC and SJVN. NHPC, a Navratna company under the Ministry of Power, is India's largest hydropower developer and has expanded its focus into solar and wind energy.

Supporting India's Energy Transition

Essar Power's overarching energy strategy integrates renewable and emerging clean energy solutions with conventional power generation. These investments are strategically aimed at bolstering energy security and grid reliability as electricity demand continues to surge across India’s industrial and urban centers. The projects also align directly with India's national target of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, reinforcing the nation's commitment to a sustainable energy future.
