Elon Musk on Humanity's Purpose: 'Why Do You Want to Live?'

· · 2 min read

During a 2017 TED conference, Elon Musk posed a profound question: 'Why do you want to live? What's the point?' He emphasized that humanity needs an inspiring future, like becoming a multi-planet species, to find meaning and avoid sadness.

The Core Question: Why Live?

In a thought-provoking interview at the TED2017 conference in Vancouver, Canada, on April 28, 2017, entrepreneur and CEO Elon Musk challenged the audience with a fundamental question: "Why do you want to live? What's the point?" Speaking with Chris Anderson, Musk articulated his deep-seated motivations behind his ambitious ventures, particularly in space exploration and artificial intelligence.

"I want to be clear: I'm not trying to be anyone's savior. I'm just trying to think about the future and not be sad... There have to be reasons that you get up in the morning and you want to live. Why do you want to live? What's the point? What inspires you? What do you love about the future? If the future does not include being out there among the stars and being a multi-planet species, I find that incredibly depressing."

A Vision for a Multi-Planetary Future

Musk explained that his drive stems from a personal desire to avoid a future he finds "incredibly depressing." For him, humanity needs compelling reasons to get up each morning, an inspiring vision that extends beyond solving immediate terrestrial problems. This vision, he clarified, is not about being a "savior" but about fostering a hopeful and adventurous future for humankind.

His philosophy posits that humanity must expand its technological boundaries to ensure survival and find a deeper sense of purpose. This belief fuels his leadership in companies like Tesla, focused on sustainable energy, and SpaceX, which aims to make humanity a multi-planetary species by colonizing Mars. He also leads Neuralink, The Boring Company, and the generative AI startup xAI, all pushing technological frontiers.

Beyond Terrestrial Problems

While acknowledging the necessity of addressing Earth's challenges, Musk stressed that a sense of grand adventure and monumental milestones are crucial for human motivation. He believes that looking forward to a future among the stars provides the inspiring vision humanity needs to thrive and prevent a sense of existential despair. This perspective underscores his relentless pursuit of advancements in aerospace, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence, all contributing to what he sees as an essential, inspiring future for humanity.
