A 48-year-old doctor in Wuhan, China, made a significant life change, leaving her two-decade-long medical career to open a steamed bun shop. Dong Min, who is now 48, took this entrepreneurial leap at the age of 45, driven by a desire for a different, more fulfilling life away from the pressures of the medical profession.
From Gynaecologist to Bun Shop Owner
Dong Min graduated from Wuhan University School of Medicine in 1999, beginning her career as a gynaecologist in Shenzhen. She later returned to Wuhan to assist her mother with a private clinic. Following her mother's retirement, the clinic closed, and Dong relocated to her hometown of Tianmen in Hubei province, where she assumed a role as a doctor and legal representative for a community hospital.
However, this position brought considerable stress beyond patient care. Dong explained that she faced significant mental strain, not just from treating patients, but also from managing non-medical responsibilities like frequent government inspections and the heavy burden of legal responsibility in medical disputes, which are common in China.
Finding Joy in a New Path
The idea of a career change began to form in 2023, inspired by a friend whose family operated a similar steamed bun shop. Dong initially invested in a bun shop, but when the chef unexpectedly resigned, she took it upon herself to learn the craft. She quickly mastered the skills and discovered a genuine enjoyment for the work, eventually deciding to leave medicine entirely to run the shop full-time.
Her decision was initially met with opposition from her family, who viewed being a doctor as a more traditionally respected profession. However, Dong remained resolute. “I am nearly 50 years old and have gone through many experiences. I don’t care what others think of me. I just want to live a life I love and live for myself,” she stated.
Her mother and brother eventually came to support her new venture, even occasionally assisting at the shop. Despite the demanding nature of running the business, Dong finds immense happiness in her work, a stark contrast to her previous career where thoughts of quitting were frequent. In July, she successfully opened a second outlet, demonstrating the success and passion she has found in her new calling.
“There is no definitive answer in life. It is never too late to make a change,” Dong said, expressing her hope to continue running her bun store for as long as she is able.
