Digi Yatra Biometric System to Expand to 27 More Airports by 2027

· · 2 min read

India's Digi Yatra biometric boarding system will expand to 27 additional airports by 2027, bringing the total to 65. The platform has already processed over 10 crore passenger journeys, significantly cutting airport entry times.

The Digi Yatra biometric passenger processing system is set for a major expansion, with plans to extend its services to 27 more airports across India by 2027. This initiative will bring the total number of Digi Yatra-enabled airports to 65, significantly enhancing the travel experience for millions of air passengers.

Streamlining Airport Operations

Since its inception, the Digi Yatra app has facilitated over 10 crore seamless journeys, with more than 2.4 crore downloads across iOS and Android platforms. The Ministry of Civil Aviation reports that the system has dramatically reduced average airport entry processing times from 15 seconds to just 5 seconds per passenger by replacing manual document verification. This efficiency has optimized terminal infrastructure, decreased congestion, and minimized manual processing overheads.

Key Expansion Details

  • Total Airports: The expansion will result in 65 airports nationwide offering Digi Yatra services.
  • New Greenfield Airports: Upcoming greenfield airports in Navi Mumbai, Jewar, and Bhogapuram are slated to be fully Digi Yatra-enabled from their operational start.

Meeting Future Passenger Growth

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu highlighted the exponential growth in domestic air travel, noting that daily passenger traffic has frequently surpassed the 5-lakh mark in recent years. Projections indicate that annual passenger traffic across Indian airports could reach 50 crore by 2030 and double to nearly 100 crore by 2040.

To manage this anticipated surge effectively, the government is implementing various digital solutions, including:

  • Digi Yatra
  • Self-Baggage Drop Facilities
  • Augmentation of Air Traffic Control Automation Systems
  • The AirSewa portal for grievance redressal
  • AI-powered digital twins for optimizing airport operations

Enhanced Inclusivity and Security

The Digi Yatra platform is also becoming more inclusive. It currently supports 11 languages, with plans to add 11 more regional languages by the end of the year. Furthermore, security and passenger privacy are paramount to the platform's design.

“Digi Yatra’s platform’s foundational architecture also strictly prioritizes security and passenger privacy through a privacy-by-design approach. Passenger data remains encrypted and securely stored on the user's own device, shared only for a limited duration with the origin airport for immediate verification purposes,” stated the Ministry.

This expansion underscores India's commitment to modernizing its aviation infrastructure and providing a more efficient, secure, and user-friendly travel experience for all passengers.
