Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has revealed an ambitious proposal for a new high-speed rail corridor that promises to dramatically cut travel times between Delhi and Patna. The plan, if materialized, would integrate Uttar Pradesh and Bihar into India’s expanding bullet train network, offering a swift 4.5-hour journey between the national capital and Patna.
The proposed corridor aims to connect Delhi with several key cities across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, including Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, and Varanasi, before reaching Patna. This expansion marks a significant step in enhancing regional connectivity and economic development.
Drastically Reduced Travel Times Across Northern India
The high-speed rail project is set to revolutionize inter-city travel with impressive time savings:
- Delhi to Agra: The approximately 200-kilometer distance could be covered in just 58 minutes.
- Delhi to Kanpur: A journey of around 455 km is projected to take 1 hour 50 minutes.
- Delhi to Lucknow: Travelers could reach Lucknow (around 490 km) in about 2 hours 12 minutes.
- Delhi to Prayagraj: The 750 km route is estimated at three hours.
- Delhi to Varanasi: Covering nearly 945 km, this stretch could take approximately 3 hours 33 minutes.
- Delhi to Patna: The longest proposed segment, spanning about 1,170 km, would be completed in approximately 4.5 hours.
Economic Boost and Connectivity Expansion
Minister Vaishnaw highlighted that this corridor would be the next major bullet train project in the country, following the ongoing Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor. It would be the first to directly link the National Capital with numerous cities in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, providing substantial relief to millions of passengers.
Beyond passenger convenience, the project is expected to have a broad economic impact. By significantly improving connectivity, it aims to foster business, tourism, and economic activity across the entire Delhi-UP-Bihar belt. Religious tourism destinations like Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Patna, alongside Agra, are particularly poised to benefit from quicker and more efficient travel options.
India continues to accelerate its high-speed rail ambitions. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project, designed for speeds of 350 kmph and operational speeds of 320 kmph, targets its initial service launch between Surat and Vapi by August 2027.
