Delhi-NCR Leads India's Consumption Market, But Smaller Cities Outspend Per Household

· · 2 min read

Delhi-NCR emerges as India's largest urban consumption market with ₹11.2 lakh crore in annual household spending. However, a new study reveals smaller cities like Chandigarh and Thiruvananthapuram lead in average spending per household, showcasing diverse economic patterns.

A recent 100-city study titled “The Many Urban Indias,” conducted by People Research on India’s Consumer Economy (PRICE) and Tata, highlights the complex landscape of the nation's urban consumption. The report reveals that while Delhi-NCR stands as India’s largest urban consumption market in aggregate, smaller cities are demonstrating significantly higher average spending per household.

Delhi-NCR's Dominance by Scale

Delhi-NCR's position as the country's largest consumption market is primarily a function of its vast scale. With approximately 7.5 million households, the National Capital Region's combined annual spending is estimated at an impressive ₹11.2 lakh crore. This figure significantly surpasses other major urban centers; Mumbai's consumption market registers at ₹6.4 lakh crore, while Bengaluru's is ₹5.5 lakh crore. Together, Mumbai and Bengaluru's markets are only marginally larger than Delhi-NCR's on their own.

Smaller Cities Lead in Per-Household Spending

The picture shifts dramatically when consumption is analyzed on a per-household basis. Several smaller cities outpace the major metros in this metric, indicating robust individual purchasing power.

  • Chandigarh leads with an average annual household consumption of ₹19.2 lakh.
  • Thiruvananthapuram follows closely at ₹17.6 lakh.
  • Vadodara records ₹17.5 lakh.
  • Other notable cities with high household consumption include Tiruppur (₹16.8 lakh) and Surat (₹15.5 lakh).

Among the larger metropolitan areas, Bengaluru leads with an average annual household consumption of ₹15.1 lakh, followed by Delhi at ₹14.9 lakh. Mumbai households spend an average of ₹13.7 lakh per year, while Hyderabad and Chennai record ₹13.4 lakh and ₹12.6 lakh, respectively. Kolkata is positioned at the lower end among the six major cities, with an average household consumption of ₹10.1 lakh.

Diverse Spending Patterns Across India

The report also delves into how households allocate their spending. Across the Big Six cities, non-food expenditure constitutes a significant 70.1% of total consumption, with food accounting for the remaining 29.9%.

Key Non-Food Expenditure Categories:

  • Housing & household utilities: 23.3%
  • Transportation: 22.2%
  • Education: 7.0%
  • Fashion: 5.7%
  • Healthcare: 5.2%
  • Entertainment: 2.6%
  • Beauty & personal care: 1.2%

Delhi’s sheer scale is particularly evident in transportation spending, where its estimated consumption of ₹2.9 lakh crore for transport alone exceeds Pune’s entire consumption market of ₹2.5 lakh crore. These findings underscore that India's consumption story is far from uniform and cannot be fully understood by focusing solely on its largest metropolitan markets. The diverse urban landscape presents a fragmented yet dynamic economy with varied spending power.
