The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has unveiled the Master Plan for Delhi 2047 (MPD-2047), a comprehensive roadmap designed to prepare the capital for a projected population of nearly 3.2 crore residents by the year 2047. This ambitious plan envisions a more connected, sustainable, and economically dynamic metropolis, focusing on housing, advanced transportation, vertical development, environmental restoration, and a vibrant 24x7 economy.
Addressing Housing Needs with High-Density Development
A primary objective of the MPD-2047 is to tackle the escalating demand for housing. The plan anticipates a need for 30-40 lakh additional dwelling units by 2047. To achieve this, it strongly advocates for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), promoting higher-density residential and commercial growth within approximately 500 meters of existing and planned Metro, railway, and Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors. This strategy aims to foster compact urban growth and reduce commute times.
A Skyward Shift: 100-Storey Towers
Among the plan's most striking proposals is the possibility of constructing landmark buildings that could exceed 100 floors. This shift towards vertical development is earmarked for areas where existing infrastructure can adequately support such structures, primarily around major transport hubs and commercial centers. However, strict building restrictions will remain in place for sensitive zones, including the Lutyens' Bungalow Zone, Civil Lines, Connaught Place, the Ridge, the Yamuna floodplain, and protected heritage areas.
Expanding Connectivity: Metro, RRTS, and Futuristic Mobility
Delhi's public transportation network is slated for significant expansion. The MPD-2047 targets an impressive 695-km Metro network by 2047, a substantial increase from the current 416 km. Furthermore, the plan proposes six new RRTS corridors, seven high-speed rail corridors, and enhanced regional connectivity. Major multimodal transport hubs are envisioned at key locations such as Anand Vihar, Sarai Kale Khan, and Kashmere Gate.
Looking beyond traditional modes, the plan also integrates futuristic mobility options. The vision includes the introduction of air taxis and air pods, aiming to revolutionize urban travel. Improved connectivity between Indira Gandhi International Airport and the new Noida International Airport at Jewar, along with integrated ticketing systems, intelligent transport systems, and technology-driven traffic management, are also part of the blueprint.
Environmental Focus: Yamuna Restoration
Environmental sustainability is a core component of the Master Plan. The 22-km Wazirabad-Okhla stretch of the Yamuna River has been identified for extensive ecological restoration. Thirteen major projects covering approximately 1,700 hectares of the floodplain are proposed, alongside the treatment of all 22 drains flowing into the river. The plan mandates keeping the active floodplain free from construction, allowing only permitted recreational activities.
Towards a 24x7 Economy
To foster a more dynamic urban environment, the MPD-2047 seeks to cultivate a vibrant night-time economy. It proposes the creation of 24-hour city nodes, precincts, and circuits centered around tourism, culture, public spaces, and commercial activities. This initiative would allow restaurants, retail outlets, sports facilities, and cultural venues to operate for extended hours, complemented by improved walking and cycling networks to enhance public spaces and accessibility.
Ultimately, the Master Plan for Delhi 2047 aims to transform the capital into a denser, better-connected, and technologically advanced city, balancing ambitious vertical development and futuristic transport solutions with crucial environmental protection and a robust 24x7 economy.
