NEW DELHI – The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday announced the signing of a substantial ₹661.50 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) to procure BrahMos fire control systems and launchers. These critical components are designated for deployment on Indian Navy warships, bolstering the nation's maritime defense capabilities.
The agreement, finalized in New Delhi, falls under the 'Buy (Indian-IDDM)' category, signifying a strong commitment to domestic manufacturing and self-reliance in defense technology. A key aspect of this project is its indigenous content, with a minimum of 68% of the systems and launchers being sourced from Indian industries, including various Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
Officials anticipate that the project will generate significant employment opportunities over a three-year period. Beyond job creation, the initiative is poised to strengthen India’s maritime security architecture and marks a pivotal step in the ongoing efforts to indigenize advanced military technology.
BrahMos System: A Maritime Powerhouse
The BrahMos system, already a cornerstone of the Indian Navy's frontline warships, serves as the primary surface-to-surface missile for maritime strike operations. It is renowned for its ability to engage both land and sea targets from extended ranges with pinpoint accuracy and supersonic speed.
Developed through a joint venture between India and Russia, the BrahMos is a versatile supersonic cruise missile system utilized by India's armed forces across land, sea, and air-based platforms. This latest contract underscores its continued importance in modernizing the Indian Navy's formidable arsenal.
